Obituary

Alan Edward Mann, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, 67, returned home to his Heavenly Father on Friday, 23 February 2018. He passed away from cancer peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. Of Herriman Utah, formerly of Saratoga Springs he was born in Phoenix, AZ on 14 August 1950, to Edward O'Brian Mann and Elaine Petersen. As the son of an Air Force Lt. Colonel, he lived in diverse places, including Arizona, Texas, Kansas, Utah, Georgia, California, Puerto Rico, and North Dakota. He graduated from Red River High School in Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1965 at the age of 15. As a high school senior, he taught college math courses. Through his childhood adventures with his father and brothers, he learned a love of exploration and the outdoors. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the France Paris Mission from 1969-1971. Alan studied accounting at Brigham Young University and began working as an accountant in 1973 and worked for Wisdom Manufacturing. He owned a collectables shop for 11 years, and then as an accredited genealogist, he worked in the Family History Department of the LDS Church until he retired in 2017. In this career, he worked as a British Research Consultant and in many other positions and was a key player in creating Family Search and the Family Search Wiki. He was extremely influential in integrating technology with Family History, making many program suggestions for the LDS Family History Department. Not only was family history his profession, it was his passion. Alan was involved in multiple genealogical associations, including National Genealogical Society and Utah Genealogical Association (UGA). He served on the UGA Board. He was a highly popular lecturer across the United States and overseas on technology in Family History. He considered his greatest professional achievement to be helping to establish the genealogy and technology conference now known as RootsTech. Alan met his sweetheart, Lorinda Lee Becker, in Paris on a BYU Family History travel-study trip. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on 1 December 1972. In their early married life, Alan and Lorinda lived in Minnesota and Colorado, then moved to Utah, where they raised their family of five daughters and one son. Always highly competitive, Alan raised a family of competitors who continue to love playing all sorts of games. He passed on his love of excitement and adventure to his children and grandchildren. His non-judgmental listening ear was always available and could be counted on. His 17 grandchildren could always expect open arms and a good joke. He was known for one-liners and dead-pan dry wit, and his steady nature calmed his grandchildren as babies. As a life-long faithful member of the LDS Church, Alan served his Heavenly Father humbly in many positions. He was a man of God, a man of faith, a man of action who followed his heart. He always felt truly blessed to make his living helping people to live their religion more successfully through family history. Alan was preceded in death by his parents and his wife's parents, Fred and Arlene Becker. He is survived by his wife; his children: Catrina (Rolando) Alfaro; Heather (Ammon) Nelson; Sarah (Brett) Peterson; Christina Smith; Rebekah (Nathan) Linnell; and Daniel Mann; his 17 grandchildren; and his brothers Richard (Ramona, recently deceased) Mann and Steven (Charlotte) Mann.
