Obituary

Alan Eugene Newell was born March 1, 1951 in Provo, Utah. He passed away from a 3 year battle with cancer he ardently fought on January 31, 2022. He grew up assisting his parents with their family cherry orchard that spanned 9 acres surrounding their handmade home on 400 East near Orem's city center. He grew up to become a hard worker and spent his main career working for Geneva Steel where he banded coil and worked near the open hearth. Al spent much time in the family yards learning from his dad how to become a Master Gardener. He bought his childhood home from his parents after they built another one next door. He cared for his father as he declined then passed away at home. His lifelong relationship with his mother, Ruth, showed in his daily efforts of affection and physical labors he performed with joy and creativity. We all learned what a haven a yard can become when generations put effort into their surroundings. We enjoy and will continue to cultivate this legacy with our lives and energy. Al graduated from Orem High School in 1969. Following this he attended Utah Valley State College and earned two Associates Degrees: Business Management and Environmental Technology. He worked for Orem City landscaping the parks during the day to come home and carry on with this passion in his two yards all the way to the end of his life. He worked at Snowbird ski resort in his youth, Heckett, and USX. Al met Colette in 1984 and their 17 year courtship became our way of life until they married on December 10, 2001 on Noelle's 20th birthday. They celebrated twenty years of marriage this past December. What a supportive and aware husband and father he has been. His listening skills and minimal advice always made sense for our best interest. His tender care showed daily in lessons of morality, speech, and action. Owl (his nickname from his daughter that carries on to his 5 grandkids) also enjoyed golfing as a lifelong hobby that he practiced between the yards. His son, Spencer, also enjoyed this hobby with him at local golf courses often. The sound of his clubs tapping the balls then bouncing off rocks in the faux yard-river or wooden porch covering were classic sounds he made often. Another sound Al made was a paradiddle: this is an exercise on his drum with a specific sequence he taught me as a young girl (his daughter, Noelle). He often played it in the living room while watching television on a drumming pad he had made of wood covered in rubber to absorb the impact. Strengthening his body and hands were goals of his including squeezing hand strengtheners, bopping a punching bag in the carport, lifting hand weights, and practicing karate earning a brown belt at the height of his practice. Fishing and cooking that delicious rainbow trout when we got home from camping or day trips was a frequently enjoyed pastime for us as a family. Owl carried a kind and reasonable disposition. He watched and nurtured with unconditional love. He will be missed by us all and is survived by his wife, Colette L. Newell and his two children, Noelle C. Muhme and Spencer L. Madsen. Both his parents precede him in death: Ruth I and Daniel E. Newell as well as his brother, Dan Newell. He is also survived by Aunts Mariam Jordan, Karleen Vidinhar, and Evelyn O'Brien as well as Uncle Stuart Ivy.
