"Hap" Albert David Smith 78, passed away peacefully at his home in Santaquin, Utah on May 20, 2020 surrounded by his family. His larger-than-life persona, his Ripley's Believe It or Not stories and trademark stubbornness will never be forgotten. Hap was born to Hazel Elizabeth James and Albert Andrew Smith on November 9, 1941 in Ogden, Utah. He was the baby of the family and his older sisters and brother absolutely adored him. Hap got his infamous nickname when he had a hernia when he was 2 years old and didn't cry so he was dubbed "Happy". The nickname was reaffirmed after he was shot by a hunter around age 5; he didn't cry at all. Happy was later shortened to Hap for being so Hap Hazard. Hap had an adventurous soul and was constantly getting injured and into trouble. He will always be known for his incredible story telling about his adventurous HapHazard life. Albert was affectionately known by many names like Hap Hazardous, Happy go Lucky, Hap, Old Fart, Old Man, Animal, Trouble, Daddy, Rambo Cowboy Grandpa and True Friend. Hap had many loves in life like hunting, fishing, camping, target shooting, animals, Parker Mountain, story telling, spending time with his 10 children, 34 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Hap was always willing to help other people. He would do all he could for those around him and it gave him great joy to be able to serve others. He was someone you could always count on. He would drop whatever he was doing to be there for his family, friends, neighbors and even complete strangers. Hap lived in Ogden, Utah for most of his life until 1984 when he moved to Orem, Utah and then to Santaquin, Utah in 2005. He worked at Hill Air Force Base until he retired in 1980. He was one of BYU football's greatest fans and could be heard rooting for them from his living room. Our dad was our rock, you could always count on him. He taught us courage and how to serve others. As tough of a guy that he was, he had a tender heart and a fun spirit. He was an amazing Rambo Cowboy Grandpa to his grandkids. Family meant the world to him. We can't wait to see our dear daddy, grandpa and friend again. He was loved so very much! He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bill, Sisters Jan & Mellie and his daughter Susie. He is survived by his sister June Wilson, his sons Russell Smith, Michael (Tirzah) Smith and his daughters Darlene (Troy) Backus, Cindi (Tom), Hazel (Cody) Christiansen, April (Cody) Roberts, Holly (Tim) Shanto, Laura (Jarvey) Murdock and Colleen (Jerry) Middleton. We are very grateful for all the nurses that put up with him, I mean took care of him during the last days of his life, especially Camille who became a great friend to Hap.
