Obituary

Alta Lou Shakespear Adair of Lindon, Utah passed away on February 4, 2023 in Highland, Utah.

Alta was born November 30, 1934 in Tropic, Utah, a small town at the foot of Bryce Canyon to Harley Alton Shakespear and Louie Dugard Ott. Her name, Alta Lou, was formed from part of the names of both of her parents. She was the fourth of ten children. She was known among her siblings as the one who was always helping her mother in the kitchen and around the house. She learned how to work at a young age.

She started working outside her home at age 14 at Bryce Canyon Lodge, first as a dishwasher, then a waitress, a housekeeper and in the curio shop. After high school graduation, she attended Utah State Agricultural College in Logan. After a short in-person courtship followed by a lengthy courtship by mail, she married her childhood sweetheart, J Brent Adair, on December 28, 1956 in the St. George LDS Temple. They lived and raised their family in Manhattan, Kansas; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Des Moines, Iowa; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Brea, California; and finally, after Brent's retirement, to Lindon, Utah.

She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many callings over her 88 years. She was known for making baby quilts for her grandchildren and all the babies born in her ward while Brent served as bishop. She loved to appreciate the beauty of nature and when her family was young they did a lot of camping and canoeing, though she did not ever herself like to get in the water to swim. Through early years until the end of her life she loved to play games and there were many in rotation, with favorite ones changing regularly. It was amazing that near the end of her life, though her mind was weakening in many ways, she could still total the points on the 6 dice in a game of Zilch and would shout "wahoo" when she got a good score. She loved to read the scriptures, reading the Book of Mormon many, many times in her life. She kept a daily diary for most of her life. She read LDS church related books and a wide variety of novels and historical books. She was passionate about jigsaw puzzles and watching Jeopardy. She loved to garden, growing flowers as well as vegetables. She canned many quarts of fruit and many pints of jam over the years. She loved her home and it was where she was most happy.

Brent passed away in February 2020. Alta was faced with losing her life companion and adjusting to being alone at the same time the world shut down for the pandemic. She generally bore the trials of getting older with a smile and always with gratitude for visitors, friends and family who helped her with the challenges of life. Alta is survived by her five children, Morgan Adair, Carolee Weber (Brent), Sherilyn Metzger (Kurt), Erin Cox (Nathan), and Joel Adair (Kim), 23 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.
