IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Andrew Richard
James
March 9, 1993 – January 18, 2022
Andrew Richard James passed away on January 18, 2022, in a tragic car accident. In his 28 years he brought immeasurable joy to his family and friends, and worked with fierce determination to prepare for the bright future ahead of him.
Born on March 9, 1993 in Provo, Utah as the beloved oldest child of Rick and Ellen James, Andrew became a protector and example to his three younger siblings that followed.
As a child, he loved toy cars and would line them up perfectly in rows. That love of automobiles continued throughout his life. He was always a kid at heart, and no matter his age expected Legos every Christmas to assemble with his siblings.
He attended American Heritage School, Mountain Ridge Junior High and American Fork High School before moving with his family to Vienna, VA, where he spent his senior year, then returned to graduate with his fellow American Fork Cavemen in 2011.
Andrew played football and lacrosse in middle school, and performed on the drumline in high school, which presented the opportunity to compete at the marching band Grand Nationals at Colts Stadium in Indianapolis. He also played for The Loyals, a rock band formed with his friends.
An Eagle Scout, Andrew loved going on many high adventures with incredible leaders, especially his dad, but the greatest adventure of his life was a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Indonesia. While there, he embraced the culture, served others selflessly, and met some of the greatest friends of his life.
Andrew loved football. He cheered loyally for the Broncos, and three times got to do so all the way to the Super Bowl. He loved playing as well, and relished his time with friends on their BYU intramural team "The Convicts."
In 2017 he graduated from BYU with a degree in Philosophy, then returned to Washington DC to work for Jones Day's Issues and Appeals group as a project manager and paralegal. While there, he worked hard and quickly earned the respect of the attorneys around him, who in turn inspired him to become a lawyer himself and prepare tirelessly for the LSAT.
It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Margaret Cohen, also an aspiring lawyer. When he was accepted to USC Law School and she to UPenn Law, they committed to a long-distance relationship and began to plan their future. They were deeply in love and excited to have both secured jobs at DC law firms and to start their lives together.
He spent the summer of 2021 working with Senator Mike Lee on his Judiciary Committee, a highlight of his life, and was currently in his second year of law school with plans to return as a summer associate at Jones Day. We grieve for his promising future, and cling to the knowledge that families are forever.
Andrew is preceded in death by his grandpa, Richard Oliver Cozzens, his favorite aunt, Karen James, his favorite uncle, Larry Wood, his beloved aunt Debra Kay Cozzens and his best friend Jake Norman. He is survived by his grandparents, MarLynn Rees James, Jane Marie James, and Mary Jane Cozzens; his parents, Richard Lynn James and Ellen Cozzens James; his siblings Janessa James, Harrison Oliver James (Sarah), and Nathan Rees James, currently serving a mission in Brazil; the love of his life, Margaret Cohen and her loving family; and countless friends, aunts, uncles and cousins.
