Anita Cook Berlin, Age 72, of Orem, Utah passed away on Monday March 25, 2019 in Lehi, Utah due to complications associated with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
Anita was born in Vancouver, Washington on January 6, 1947 to the late Lillian Betts Cook and the late Ervin Cook. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Terry Cook and Oscar Cook. She is survived by her son Dustin (Sabine) Berlin and her daughter Erin (Jay) Berlin; brother Ivan Cook; and her six grandchildren Marina, Cali, Luke, Taylor, Rylynn, and Adalie.
Anita was the daughter of two hardworking, intelligent parents who were farmers, gardeners, and craftsmen. She was a first generation college student and the first woman to graduate in her family. While attending BYU she met and later married Daryl Berlin. Their children, Erin and Dustin, were truly hers. Their presence with her was the final thing she talked about before she passed. Though she and Daryl later divorced, Erin and Dustin always felt the love and support of both parents.
Anita was an educator, both formally as a first grade teacher and through her service and kindness to others. She embodied selflessness, faith, service, grace, and dignity. She took pride in her home and yard. It was always beautiful and she found joy and satisfaction in these things, even when her mobility was very limited. Her mother passed on this love of gardening to her and in turn she instilled this love to her son and grandson.
Anita faithfully cared for her mother both leading up to and during the years her mother suffered from dementia. She enjoyed a memorable trip to Hawaii with Lillian, visiting beautiful gardens together. This example of care for her mother was foundational for her family as they attempted to care and help her through her own degenerative condition.
As a grandmother, she regularly attended soccer games for each of her grandchildren in Utah. She also followed with interest the activities and talents of her grandchildren in Texas and asked about them often. She was a positive supporter of them all and made each feel special and important. To her grandchildren, she was the "Toy Grandma" and made sure to keep a special area of toys, games, and items that would interest her grandchildren whose ages now range from 5–18. Grandma loved each of you.
Anita was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She loved the gospel and had a strong testimony of her Savior. Anita enjoyed several callings including choir director and enjoyed choosing the music for sacrament meetings. Perhaps most of all, she is well remembered as being a Visiting Teacher and providing compassionate service to her fellow ward members. Many have shared that she was a "visiting angel" to them.
There are no doubt countless acts of kindness, support, and service of which only the recipients are aware. Likewise, she was lifted by your kindness through visits, acts of service, and prayers. We are so very grateful for the unseen interactions you had with her at both homes in Orem the past 15 years and for a short time at Covington Senior Living and finally at Pointe Meadows in Lehi. She lives on in each of you. She loved you, too.
Mom, you were and are enough. We'll love you forever, we'll like you for always, for now and forever our mother you'll be.
