Arlene Lois Johnson Wirth, 89, died in the wee hours of Saturday, October 24, 2020. Laid low from the effects of a stroke in January 2019, she later suffered a serious head blow from a fall brought about by an apparent second stroke in June of that year, leaving her bed-bound until her death. Arlene was born on April 20, 1931 in Woodland, Washington. The second of four children to Morris and Olga Johnson, formally of Steele, North Dakota. She was preceded in death by her parents, her older brother Earl, and her younger sister Evelyn. She is survived by her youngest sister Marjorie. In 1933, before Auntie Marge was born, they moved from Woodland to Baker (now Baker City), in Eastern Oregon where Marjorie was born in 1938. Arlene- a.k.a. "Mom"- attended North Baker Elementary, grades one through five, from 1937 to 1941; Baker Junior High, grades six through eight, 1942-1945; Baker Senior High, grades nine through twelve, graduating in the spring of 1949. In the spring of 1950, Mom married our dad, Lewis Howard Wirth (Baker High, Class of '46), at the local Lutheran Church (LCA) where mom had been a life-long member. Dad, typical of most Oregonians, then and now, was a nominal Christian in what has been called the "least-churched state in the union". Nevertheless, he quickly set about at what can be assumed the "gentle urging" of his bride, Arlene- completing a 90-day program of instruction and became a "confirmed communicant member". The newly weds then settled out at the "Wirth Place" near Medical Springs, located some 25 miles northeast of Baker. They began the arduous task of creating and raising a flock of four kids. Julie Anne (b. 1951), Lewis Scott (b. 1952) and renamed "Scotty Anne" by sister Julie Anne around 1955, Blaine Morris (b. 1955) and Jeffrey Graham (b. 1960). Dad, having taken on a winter job in town for Al Crosan, owner of 'Commercial Welding Co.', maker of steel cattle-handling equipment, rose rapidly to Production Manager of the very successful firm, renamed 'Powder River Ranch Equipment', after the river that runs through Baker. In 1960, the company made places to expand eastward, choosing Provo, UT for the move. Dad was, uh, "asked" to join with two other employees: the late Joe DeRoest and the late Meredith Spence, and we moved to Provo in June of 1961, setting up residence in Orem, and the rest is, as they say, history. Arlene is survived by her four children, Julie and her husband Gerald "Jerry" Sorensen; Scott, Blaine and his wife, Laura; and Jeffrey and his wife Debbie; ten grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
