Arvil Monte Holt passed away peacefully on May 11, 2026, due to congestive heart failure. He was born on April 27, 1935, in Bingham Canyon, Utah to Arvil and Jennie Adams Holt. When he was one-year-old they moved to the countryside near Placerville, California. He attended a one room school housethru eighth grade. Monte graduated from El Dorado County High School in Placerville, where he played basketball and baseball. Monte attended Brigham Young University where he met Shirley Harward, the love of his life. They were married onSeptember 16, 1954, in the Manti Temple. He was in BYU’s second graduating class of electrical engineers in 1957. He completed an MBA at Santa Clara University and was an eager learner throughout life in varied topics.
Monte and Shirley raised their family of six children in Sunnyvale, California, where he worked as a Program Managerin military electronics, until retirement at the age of 55. He was a devoted father, coaching the boys’ teams and always present for everyone’s activities.
He had a warm and witty sense of humor, even teasing and joking with family, friends, and care givers as his health declined.
Monte enjoyed all types of outdoor activities, including fishing, hunting, golfing, skiing, side by side riding, and playing softball. As an avid fisherman, he got his sons or buddies to take him out on the lake, even in his 90th year of life! Monte played in the All Church Softball Tournament in Salt Lake City in the 60’s, and last year won three gold medals in golf events at the Huntsman Senior Games in St. George, where they wintered every year.
As a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he held numerous priesthood assignments including Elders Quorum President, Bishop, and Stake President Counselor. His favorite calling was teaching Gospel Doctrine. Since retiring and moving to Orem, Utah, he and Shirley served four missions including Leeds, England, the Washington D.C. Temple, the Nauvoo sites, and the N.Y. Manhattan Temple. He has done extensive family history and temple work. One winter Monte attended the St. George Temple 80 days straight.
He is survived by his wife Shirley and children: Scott & Loralee Holt – St. George, UT; Mark & Debbie Holt – Granite Bay, CA; Kurt & Kellie Holt – Salt Lake City, UT; Bruce & Natalie Holt – St. George, UT; Gary & Kami Holt – Highlands Ranch, CO and Ruth & Doug Dodson – Pleasant Grove, UT; as well as 24grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held at Walker Sanderson Mortuary (646 N 800 E Orem) Friday, May 29, 6:00-8:00pm. An additional viewing will be held on Saturday, May 30, 9:30-10:30am, followed by the Funeral at 11:00am. The services will be at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1120 E 600 N Orem). A webcast of the service will be available at www.walkersanderson.com. Interment will be at Payson City Cemetery.
