Obituary

August Wilhelm Jaussi, age 96, died Friday, July 15, 2022 in St. George, Utah of natural causes. He was born August 26, 1925 in Paris, Bear Lake County, Idaho, a son of Gottfried and Susanna Schlunegger Jaussi. He married Laureen Berdell Richardson on December 23, 1955 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

He completed all of his public schooling in Paris, Idaho. Immediately after graduating from Fielding High School at age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II for 34 months. The last two years were aboard a "baby" aircraft carrier as a Fire Controlman.

Upon discharge from the navy, he attended Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, where he was a member of the track team. In 1947, he left college to serve 30 months as an LDS missionary in the Netherlands and Flemish Belgium mission. Upon his return, he attended the University of Idaho where he received a B.S. degree in zoology in 1953. He was awarded a M.S. degree from Brigham Young University in physiology in 1955, and a Ph.D. degree from Oklahoma State University in 1960 in endocrine physiology.

From 1957 to 1962 he taught biology and physiology at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. In 1962, he moved to Provo, Utah as a Professor of Zoology at Brigham Young University. In 1963, he and his family moved to Orem, Utah, where he resided for 57 years. He retired from Brigham Young University in 1990.

Mr. Jaussi was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in leadership and teaching positions in Sunday School, priesthood quorums, and youth organizations. He served as a branch president and member of the high council in the BYU 7th Stake, executive secretary to an area authority and stake clerk in the Sharon Stake. He and his wife served a church service mission to the Family History Center in Salt Lake City.

He was interested in studying the activities and interrelationships of local and national political figures and political organizations. He participated in political campaigns and attended meetings of local governing councils.

His favorite activity was farming, and he enjoyed his half—acre in Orem with a garden and small orchard. He enjoyed genealogy and compiled his family history into a book entitled "From Switzerland to Zion."

He is survived by his wife Laureen of St. George and six children: Haldon Richard Jaussi (Julie) of Sandy, Utah; Susan Marie Westover (Scot) of Pleasant Grove, Utah; Kurt Christian Jaussi (Susan) of Riverton, Utah; Clayton Lenox Jaussi (Simone) of West Haven, Utah; Paul Gottfried Jaussi (Laura) of St. George, Utah; and Laura Berdell Whiting (Brian) of Hillsboro, Oregon. He is also survived by 25 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 2 more great grandchildren on the way.

Funeral services, with full military rites, will be held Thursday, July 21, 2022 at Sharon 2nd Ward, 641 South 400 East, Orem, Utah, with internment immediately following in the Orem City Cemetery, Orem, Utah. The family asks that in lieu of flowers please donate to the General Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Walker Sanderson Funeral Home.
