Obituary

Barbara Jo Luke-Swain, a cherished daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully in Provo, Utah where she has been living the past 6 years. Born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, on February 22, 1944 to Joe and Vivian Marks, Barbara—or Bobbi Jo, as she was affectionately known by her family, was a true southern lady. Her hospitality, genuine warmth and kindness to all she knew was unmatched.

She shared a close bond with her older brother, Jimmy Marks, and cherished their memories growing up together. Barbara attended Eastway Junior High before graduating from Garinger High School, where she was the captain of the cheer team and by no surprise voted 'Most Popular' her senior year. Her spirit of leadership and enthusiasm carried her through her life, leaving an indelible mark on those she knew.

After high school, Barbara was taught by missionaries and baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Here she gained friends and a community that truly became family throughout her whole life. She married Norman Luke, and they were blessed with two loving sons, Preston and Chad, who they happily raised together. They later divorced and she met and married Jasper Swain, with whom she spent many happy years with creating many wonderful memories. From this, she was blessed with two stepsons John and Tim Swain, Tim's wife Cheri and granddaughter Claire.

Barbara truly was a happy person. She saw the good in life and in others; and especially found joy in serving others. She lived life with an unwavering excitement, maintaining a positive outlook regardless of the circumstances. Her infectious laughter and zest for life brought happiness to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. While her manners were impeccable and she was rarely seen without makeup, heels and a beautiful hat; she sat comfortable with anyone and made all feel at ease.

Her greatest love was reserved for her family and lifelong friends, whom she cherished deeply. She had a special bond with her grandchildren, who affectionately called her YaYa. She spoiled them with affection, ensuring they always felt cherished and adored. She had a gift to make each one feel seen, loved and valued. She took time to look them in the eye and listen. No grandchild ever left her without being happier and better than before. She also had a gift and passion for shopping, and her favorite companions were her granddaughters! She loved these excursions even more than she loved her Diet Coke.

Barbara leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness, as well as fun and laughter that will not be forgotten. Survived by her sons, Preston and his wife Rachel, grandchildren Annie Jo, Sophie, Jacob and Ellie Luke; Chad and his wife Shawn, grandchildren Taylor, Emelia, Bailey and Atlas; stepsons John Swain, Tim Swain, wife Cheri and granddaughter Claire.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 8, in Charlotte, NC, at the Hilliard Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3020 Hilliard Drive at 12:00, with a luncheon to immediately follow. All who knew and loved her are welcome.
