Barbara Ann Taylor Obituary
Barbara Ann Taylor, beloved mother, grandmother, devoted disciple of Jesus Christ, and lifelong caregiver, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2026, on Maui, Hawaii, at the age of 93.
Barbara was born on March 7, 1933, in Reno, Nevada, to Wyman and Mabel Sexsmith. She was raised primarily in Minden, Nevada, alongside her younger sisters, Jean and Donna. During her childhood, her family later moved to Las Vegas, where she attended Las Vegas High School and graduated with the Class of 1950.
Barbara married Ted Roberts in 1950, and together they welcomed four children: Phil, Cheryl, Michele, and Wyman. Later, she married Bill Taylor in August of 1968. In October of 1969, Barbara and Bill moved to Maui, Hawaii, where they built a loving blended family centered on faith, service, and devotion to one another. In 1970, they welcomed their son, Bill, completing their family.
While living in Las Vegas, Barbara worked for Atlas Steel Company as secretary and bookkeeper. During that time, she also served as secretary to the Mayor of Las Vegas, a position that reflected her professionalism, dedication, and organizational talents.
After moving to Maui, Barbara worked for Saito Engineering and later served as the bookkeeper for Taylor Construction, the family construction business she operated alongside Bill. She found great joy in serving and helping strengthen The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the island. Together, Barbara and Bill generously donated the land on which the Kihei Ward meetinghouse now stands, leaving a lasting legacy of faith and service for generations to come.
Barbara was an active leader in Scouting, serving as a Cub Scout leader and assisting Bill in his role as Scoutmaster. Together they helped mentor numerous young men, many of whom earned the rank of Eagle Scout. She found great fulfillment in encouraging youth and strengthening families through her service.
In 1984, Barbara and Bill moved to Provo, Utah, where Bill retired from the construction business. Barbara devoted herself to her family and to serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1989, they were called to serve an 18-month mission in Northern Ireland, where they faithfully served as missionaries together.
Following the passing of her husband, Bill, Barbara moved to Boise, Idaho, where she lived with and next to her son Bill Jr., his wife Kim, and their family for several years. In 2023, she returned to the island of Maui to spend the remainder of her life with her daughter Michele and son-in-law Armelio, surrounded by her loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The final years of Barbara's life on Maui were among her most cherished. She found great joy in once again experiencing the love, kindness, and compassion of the Hawaiian people,
as well as the close presence of family who surrounded and cared for her daily. The blessing of spending her final years—and ultimately passing—in the company of family was a gift that she treasured deeply. She was profoundly grateful for the love, care, and support extended to her by family, friends, and all those who helped make those years so meaningful and peaceful.
Barbara had a deep love for family history and genealogy, dedicating countless hours to researching and preserving her family's heritage. She tirelessly traced family lines and generously shared her knowledge and experience, assisting relatives, friends, and many others in discovering their own ancestral roots.
She was also gifted with her hands and found joy in creating beautiful things for others. Through crocheted blankets, handmade quilts, and countless other creations, Barbara expressed her love and care for family, friends, and those in need. Many of her children and grandchildren treasure these handmade gifts as lasting reminders of her love and generosity.
Barbara was an exceptional cook, and her home was rarely without food prepared for family, friends, and unexpected visitors alike. Hospitality was one of her great gifts. She welcomed people warmly and generously, often opening not only her kitchen but her home to those facing difficult circumstances. It was not uncommon for her to invite others to live with her family until they were able to regain stability and find their footing again. Her kindness, compassion, and willingness to serve touched countless lives and reflected the faith that guided her throughout her life.
Barbara is survived by her sister, Donna Folkman; her children, Phil (Joyce) Roberts, Cheryl (John) Kaupalolo, Michele (Armelio) Cabatingan, Wyman (Lorene) Roberts, and Bill (Kim) Taylor; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill Taylor; her sister, Jean Taylor; and her parents, Wyman and Mabel Sexsmith.
Barbara will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her generous heart, and her lifelong devotion to family and service. She had a remarkable ability to make others feel welcome, cared for, and loved. Whether through a family history project, a handmade quilt, a home-cooked meal, or an open door to someone in need, she quietly and faithfully ministered to those around her. Her legacy lives on through the family she cherished, the countless lives she touched, and the enduring example of Christlike love that she leaves behind.
