Obituary

Beth Miller Hakanson passed away at home on May 31, 2020. She was the wife of Donald Kip Hakanson for 49 years and mother to Justin, Jacob, and Benjamin.

Born at Philadelphia Naval Hospital, October 16, 1946.

Grandmother of Phineas (11), Hamish (9), and Gideon (9).

Daughter of Richard H. Miller and Marjorie V. Mearns.

Sister of Ellen Selig and Christopher Miller.

Graduated from BYU with a degree in Art.

Married July 9, 1971 in the Salt Lake Temple.

During her life she lived in literally every corner of the United States and many places in between.

She served for years in cub scouts and loved every minute.

Teenage girls gave her hives, as she learned in a brief stint working with the Young Women.

She was a kid at heart and collected all the toys she could. Her home was filled with her dolls, Legos, trains, puppets, puzzles, squirt guns, stuffed animals, and every silly little trinket or wind-up toy she could find. Her grandsons learned to put away "Grandma's toys" at the end of their visits.

Excelled artistically in sewing, smocking, painting, photography, graphic design, and any creative endeavor other than gardening.

She bored her boys to tears in every fabric store from Oregon to Utah.

She made clothes for herself and her sons, even showing enough bravery to let her boys pick the fabric they wanted to wear.

She ran her own business designing, making, and selling American Girl doll clothes for many years.

She treated every colorful character her sons brought home with acceptance, love, and respect. She even welcomed many of them to move in for as long as they needed a place to stay. Many of those friends feel she was like another mother to them.

She loved every one of her Miniature Schnauzers: Skipper, Beau, Heidi, Mo, Muggsy, and Buddy.

She loved her convertible Volkswagen Bug and showed her impish side with her license plate frame: "You should see me without my top." (The frame was a gift from her mother, from whom she also got her sense of humor. Surprisingly, her sons are complete angels.)

She took to heart President Kimball's admonition to train her sons, so she taught them to cook and clean up afterwards and to do their own laundry. Conveniently, this coincided with her lack of love for cooking.

She was always at the ballpark with her multi-colored propeller hat and yelled to her boys to "Make my hat spin!" and "Catch these babies!"

Later in life she struggled with her breathing and memory, but always kept a positive attitude and was happy and kind to every visitor.

She brought beauty, love, and joy into our lives and we will miss her dearly.
