Obituary

Betty Gean Spencer Dowdell July 25, 1934-- January 25, 2020 Betty passed away after a long and courageous battle with dementia. Her strength was an inspiration to all that knew her. Betty was born to Garn and Norma Spencer. She loved her parents and also loved the outdoor adventures that a small town had to offer. She enjoyed many hunting trips as a youth with her father but never had the heart to hurt any animals. She was a great marksman even later in life. Her love of gardening started when she was working alongside her mother. With her father she would camp and fish and build memories that she would share for over eight decades. She graduated from Escalante High School and went on to continue her education at Brigham Young University. It is there that she met and married her husband of 49 years, Larry Dowdell. They remained in Provo to work and raised their four children Brad, Doug, Susan and Julie. Betty was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was an active member her entire life, and attended church until it became impossible to do so as a result of her failing health. She became the recipient of love from her immediate and ward family. Betty held many callings in the church, including Relief Society President, counselor in the Primary and was a faithful visiting teacher. She had a continuing desire for gospel knowledge. In 1987 she studied through the Institutes if Religion and received a Special Certificate of Achievement. Betty enjoyed being a temple worker for many years. She was a great example of faith, love and service to her family, neighbors and friends. Betty was always active in her children's life. She served in the PTA, scouting, and made endless costumes for her daughters dance recitals. Her children and grandchildren were blessed by her sewing skills. She made countless quilts, afghans, dresses, baby blankets, and bedspreads. When her son Doug requested a special logo in the middle of his bedspread she made it happen. Betty enjoyed golfing, walking, and working in the yard. She loved her beautiful and abundant garden and had an amazing ability to raise vegetables, fruits and flowers. She took great pride in keeping her yard beautiful. She made her family many delicious meals from the bounty of her garden. When Betty's illness progressed and communication became difficult, the few words that she never lost the understanding of was, "I love you." She would always reply, "I Love you too." Love was a great part of Betty's life. She showed love to many, and was loved by so many. We love you too Betty, and will miss you. Preceding her in death were her parents Garn and Norma Spencer, her younger brother Garn Jr., her husband Larry Dowdell, and Granddaughter Nicole Dowdell. Betty is survived by her children, Brad Dowdell, Doug Dowdell (Joyce), Susan Sudol (Chris), Julie McClellan (Ron), 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, with 2 more on the way. The immediate family welcomes family and friends to join them for a visitation on Friday January 31, 2020 from 9:30-10:30 am with funeral services beginning at 11:00 am.
