Obituary

Boyd John Holdaway, 76, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, in the Provo home he built 36 years ago. He was born in 1949 in Lehi to Robert and Edna (Fugal) Holdaway and was raised in Pleasant Grove in a loving family with five siblings—Jeanne, David, Steven, Barbara, and Debbie. Boyd grew up in a close-knit community that instilled in him a strong sense of family, faith, and quiet determination.

A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Boyd served a mission in the British North Mission from 1969 to 1971. Throughout his life, he served faithfully in many church callings, including as a BYU bishop and in several stake leadership roles. One of his favorite callings was working in the library, where he especially enjoyed socializing with his ward family. In all his roles, Boyd was deeply committed to serving anyone in need. He was stalwart in his faith and unwavering in his devotion to his beliefs.

Following his mission, Boyd married Louise Wilson in 1972 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together, they welcomed three children into their lives: Hilary, Katie, and Andy. After several years of working side by side with his father in their family business, Boyd made the determined decision to return to college. In 1986, he graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering.

After earning his degree, Boyd worked in aerospace and industrial fields, including positions with General Dynamics in San Diego and Valtek in Springville. He later spent 25 years working for Niels Fugal Sons Company in Pleasant Grove, retiring in 2019. Boyd greatly enjoyed his years at Fugals, where he worked alongside several cousins and formed countless meaningful friendships. He valued the camaraderie of his colleagues and took pride in work that connected him to his father and grandfather. For Boyd, it was never about titles—it was about honest work and the people beside him.

Boyd was a quiet and discerning man. He was kind, generous, and unfailingly honest. Those who knew him often remarked on his integrity; he consistently tried to do what was right and to do his very best. He was unassuming and approachable, always willing to meet others where they were and to offer help without hesitation. If something needed fixing, building, digging, or figuring out, Boyd was there—often behind the controls of a backhoe or carefully tending to something he was making better.

Boyd was a voracious reader, particularly of historical nonfiction, and a loyal fan of BYU sports. Though naturally reserved, he delighted in moments of silliness like putting on funny hats, or letting his children and grandchildren paint his toenails. He was a good sport, never placing himself above others and always willing to laugh, especially at himself.

Above all else, Boyd considered his children his greatest accomplishment. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Louise (Wilson); his children Hilary Checketts (Tim), Katie Atkins (Kenny), and Andy Holdaway (Courtney); his seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Please join us in remembering Boyd’s life on Friday, March 13, 2026, at the LDS Stake Center, 303 West 3700 North, Provo,Utah. A visitation with the family will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
