Obituary

Boyd Clyde Randall

June 17, 1941 – December 23, 2024

Orem, Utah

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Boyd Clyde Randall, age 83, who peacefully left us on December 23, 2024 after a two and a half year battle with cancer. Boyd was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend. His warmth, generosity, and unwavering love will continue to resonate with all who were privileged to know him.

Boyd was born on June 17, 1941, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Clyde Nathaniel and Florence Grix Randall and grew up in a loving family including two brothers, Reed and Dale, and a sister, Elaine. In his youth, he loved and played all sports, particularly basketball. He was on the East High School basketball team and the starting guard for the North 33rd Ward when they took the All Church Senior Championship for two years in a row. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Southern Australia where he shared his love for and testimony of Jesus Christ. Upon his return, he completed his BS in accounting, JD, and MBA degrees at the University of Utah. It was at this time that he met the love of his life, Susan Circuit. They were married in the Salt Lake City Temple on November 23, 1966. He completed a PhD at the University of Minnesota and taught at the University of Oregon before being recruited to come to BYU and help create the Masters of Tax program. Boyd dedicated his professional life teaching in this program and was known as a master teacher who not only inspired his students in the classroom but was also a great mentor and friend. Students and faculty said that as a teacher he was rigorous but fair and that no one came to his class more prepared or having worked harder than Boyd. His career also included authoring law governing taxation of estates and trusts for the Utah State Tax Commission, developing and teaching training material in tax courses for national accounting firms, writing many scholarly articles and coauthoring several textbooks.

Boyd was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and faithfully served in many callings including bishop for his ward, stake high councilor, and working with young single adults. A particularly favorite highlight was when he and Susan were called on a mission to Nova Scotia, Canada, to serve as temple workers and then were called back a year later to serve again, this time accompanied by his brother and sister-in-law. He loved the people in Nova Scotia so dearly that part of his heart never left.

Relationships were very important to Boyd. He became good friends with his fellow colleagues at BYU, who came to be known affectionately as the "lunch bunch". He loved to play golf but the most important part of the game was the social aspect of spending time with people. He loved watching and attending sporting events, including sharing his strong opinions with the referees. Boyd was a huge support to his children and his grandchildren at their games, races, performances, and other activities. His booming voice could often be heard over the crowd as he enthusiastically cheered them on. His most cherished relationships were with his dear wife Susan and his five daughters who have many fond memories of cross country road trips, Saturdays spent working in the yard together, trips to the cabin, or attending sporting events. Perhaps his favorite place was St. George, Utah, where his family frequently gathered at his condo to play games, hike, golf, and feed the swans (who became very fond of him!)

Boyd was preceded in death by his father Clyde Randall, his mother Florence Randall and his brother, Dale Randall. He is survived by his spouse, Susan Circuit Randall, his children, Tricia King (Steve), Paula Yoho (Peter), Laurie Morris (Sean), Becky Richter (Branton), Natalie Hudson (Nick), his brother, Reed Randall (Marilyn), his sister, Elaine Lloyd (Kimball), his sisters-in-law, Nila Randall, Mary Kaye Campbell, and Judy Circuit, his 21 grandchildren, and his 9 great grandchildren. His family was the center of his world, and he took immense pride in their accomplishments and happiness. Boyd's love for them was boundless, and his guidance and support will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to be a part of his life.
