Obituary

Brent Leon Zobell, age 77 and long-time resident of Orem, passed away at The Charleston Assisted Living Residence in Cedar Hills on Wednesday, July 6, 2022. Brent was born on January 25, 1945 in Richfield, Utah to Orene Staples. He spent his childhood years in Sevier County, eventually moving to Orem and graduating from Orem High School in 1963. Growing up dad loved to ice skate, snow ski, fish and hunt. He worked hard and played even harder.

In 1967 dad joined the Air Force and shortly after married the love of his life, Karen Millet. Brent, while serving in the Air Force, achieved the rank of Sergeant and honorably served during the Vietnam War. Dad had many interesting stories about serving in the military and spent time on military bases in Montana, Guam, Okinawa and Thailand. After spending 4 years in the Air Force, dad was honorably discharged and returned home to Utah where mom was eagerly awaiting his return.

In 1970 they welcomed their first child, Kurtis. Dad worked various construction jobs to support his growing family. Eventually he decided to pursue a career in law enforcement, he was hired by Orem City Police Department in 1978 and graduated from the Police Academy in 1979. Dad loved being a police officer and spoke of his years patrolling and serving the public fondly. He missed the police brotherhood and wished he could have stayed in law enforcement longer. He retired from OPD after 23 years, but continued working in various security jobs and eventually returned to Orem City working as a crossing guard. Dad loved those little kids that he helped get to and from school safely, and they loved him right back. He would often bring home treats and cards from grateful moms, dads and kids. With failing eyesight and the side effects from his diabetes, dad eventually had to retire from being a crossing guard -- which broke his heart!

Brent is survived by his three children, Kurtis (Melissa), Melisa (Ed Schenng), and Skyler (Christina). He is also survived by 9 grandchildren (Matthew, Nathan, Jacob, Daniel, Ruby, Harper, Ayda, Tyler and Locklyn) and 2 great grandchildren (Everett and Lyla), he adored each and every one of them, they were his pride and joy and he lived to see them and visit with them. He is also survived by his brother Dennis Coleman and step-sister Winnie. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Karen, in January 2021 and by his mother, Orene and step-father Walter Zobell.

Dad missed mom every day that he was without her and we are comforted knowing that they are together again. Our family would like to thank the residents, staff and administration of The Charleston Assisted Living Residence for taking good care of dad, especially his friends Chris, Ann, Loretta and Elizabeth. He enjoyed your friendship and we are so grateful you were with him at the very end. We would also like to thank Yarrow Hospice, nurses Brooklyn and Natalie, you were gentle and kind and dad appreciated it as much as we did. Thank you also to the Walker Sanderson staff, we are especially grateful to Tiffany for taking care of dad (and mom) and providing comfort and humor when it was needed. We'd like to thank Orem Police Department for honoring dad with a police escort and to the local American Legion post for providing dad with military honors at the cemetery. Last, but certainly not least, we'd like to thank friends and neighbors who took care of dad after mom passed away. Your care and friendship did not go unnoticed and was greatly appreciated. To "adopted" daughter, Carrie Rockwood Limon and husband Martin - you provided care and companionship to dad and gave countless hours helping with all kinds of tasks. We appreciate and love you both!
