Catherine Herbut Black, age 71, of Orem, UT, passed away on Jan. 5, 2019, due to complications stemming from Alzheimer's. Born June 27, 1947, Cathy was the eldest child of Michael and Vera Herbut of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where she was raised with her younger sister Barbara. Throughout all of her childhood activities, Cathy quickly found her passion in dance, and at the age of 14, she opened her first dance studio in the basement of her parents' Edmonton home. After graduating from the University of Alberta and earning a Master's degree from the University of Utah, Cathy began teaching dance at Brigham Young University in 1972, and a year later she became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1976, Cathy met her true love, New Zealand-native Ian Black, and they married in the Salt Lake Temple. Through this marriage, Cathy gained her first daughter, Marie-Adele, and in 1979 and 1981, they welcomed Jacob and Jonathan, respectively, to their family. Cathy's self-initiated studies of the Russian language and Eastern European culture would unknowingly lay the foundation for the adoption of their two daughters, Olya and Tatiana, from Russia in 2000. Cathy taught at BYU until Alzheimer's forced her into early retirement in 2013. Through countless pieces choreographed, thousands of students' lives inspired, and the priceless relationships with her colleagues, Cathy's legacy at BYU's Department of Dance will not be forgotten. Cathy will be remembered for her love for Broadway musicals, mentoring and instilling passion for dance in her students, jigsaw puzzles, genealogy, long drives with Ian, adventures with her family, and the gospel of Jesus Christ. In spite of the late challenges with Alzheimer's disease, her spontaneous dance performances would always light up a room, even until the final days of her life. Cathy was quick to act on promptings that she so clearly felt, and would always recognize the sweet, hidden miracles in everyday life. Cathy is preceded in death by her husband, Ian, and both her parents. She is survived by her five children Marie-Adele (Travis), Jacob (Michelle), Jonathan (Noelle), Olya (Brent) and Tatiana (Robert), 13 grandchildren, and her loving sister Barbara (Eric). Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, at the Cascade 5th Ward chapel, 1051 East 200 North, Orem, UT 84097. Viewings will also be held from 6:00 - 8:00 PM on Friday, Jan. 11, 2019, and from 9:30 - 10:30 AM on Saturday prior to the funeral, both at the same location. Cathy will be buried next to her husband Ian at the Orem City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Cathy's name to fund dance scholarships at Brigham Young University, through the website, www.cathyblacklegacy.org.
