Obituary

Clarence Willis Hepworth, Jr. left his earthly home peacefully March 14, 2025, at his home in the tender care of his wife and daughter. He is now reunited with his loving wife Renee, parents, and brother Loel. Willis was born June 24, 1932, in Logan, Utah. He was the son of Clarence Willis Hepworth, Sr. and Emily Eleanor Thomas and brother to Loel and Rona. He often talked about his brother and sister with great love and affection. Willis grew up in a loving home with parents who encouraged his talents and education. He was always curious about the world around him and spent many hours figuring out how things worked. Early on in his life he developed his musical talent and learned to play the trumpet and trombone. This led to many hours and years of playing in dance bands and local musical groups. Over his life he collected more than 20 instruments and played most of them. Music was such a big part of his life that he was always whistling a tune wherever he went.

After high school, Willis served his country in the US Navy. He served aboard the mine sweeper the USS Osprey during the Korean War. He was proud of his service and how it shaped his life. He had a very well-founded sense of his values and principles. And he lived true to his values. When in port, he would seek out the local LDS branch and attend church and activities. Soon, some of his shipmates wanted to go with him. Many of their lives were greatly impacted by his example. He often referred to this time as his mission since he was not able to serve an LDS mission as a young man because of his military duties.

Following his release from the military, Willis attended BYU, became involved in playing in a dance band, and met Renee Joy Vacher. They fell in love and were married on Jun 22, 1956, in the Salt Lake Temple. Renee loved being with Willis wherever the band took him. She would go to all of his dances and support him. Likewise, Willis would do anything for Renee. Soon they were the parents of two daughters, Vicki and Karri.

Willis graduated from BYU and started teaching Math and Earth Science first at Dixon Junior High School in Provo and later at the new Timpview High School where he taught thousands of students over the years at the two schools. It wasn't unusual for former students to seek him out and let him know how much he impacted their lives.

His beloved wife Renee contracted cancer while still young and passed away August 22, 1990. His whole world felt shattered, and he missed Renee deeply. But soon he felt drawn to and courted a new love in his life, Virginia Rae Meservy. Virginia Rae was his wife Renee's best friend. They were soon married on February 8, 1991. And a new chapter in his life began. Their life was filled with sporting events, concerts, and trips as they enjoyed this new part of their lives. They also served together as host missionaries on Temple Square for seven years.

The family would like to thank Intermountain Hospice for their love and care of Willis during this time.

Willis is survived by his Wife Virginia Rae Meservy Hepworth, Vicki Hepworth Ashby (Gaylon), and Karri Hepworth Wightman (Edward), seven Grandchildren and seventeen Great-grandchildren. He also always embraced the Sumpter family, parents, children, and grandchildren, as his own extended family that loved and cared for him so kindly.
