Obituary

C. Brent Theurer passed away peacefully on February 13, 2025, age 90, in Orem, UT, after a long and beautiful life.

Brent was born in Logan, Utah on October 17, 1934 to wonderful parents Clark J. and Julia Gessel Theurer. He lived in nearby Providence, Utah for a few months, then in Idaho Falls, Idaho as a small boy.

His father joined the Army and during that time Brent lived in many states and attended many different grade schools—sometimes multiple schools in one year.

When his father was discharged from the service they bought a farm in Nampa, Idaho. Brent attended Nampa Jr. High and graduated from Nampa High School in 1952. He was one of four valedictorians. He raised steers and showed them at the State Fairs, and was interested enough to know he wanted a career working with animals.

Brent attended Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, Utah, now Utah State University, and started his career in Animal Nutrition

He met his loving wife, Cheri Peterson Theurer, at college and they married in the Logan Utah Temple on December 12, 1956.

Brent was in ROTC and became a 2nd Lieutenant. He served 2 years in the Army, mostly in Korea. While in Korea, he served as a counselor in the District Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

After Brent's Army discharge, he received a Masters, and then a PHD, from Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. He took his first job in Blacksburg, Virginia, at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, now known as Virginia Tech, doing teaching and research.

His second job was in Tucson, Arizona at the University of Arizona doing research and teaching. Brent and Cheri lived in Tucson for 35 years and raised their family and enjoyed many wonderful friends, colleagues and students.

They were blessed with four amazing, wonderful children and had many spiritual experiences, fun parties, sporting events and trips together. He loved his wife and children dearly and was a wonderful husband and father.

After retiring they returned to Utah to again enjoy children, grandchildren, and extended family. They were blessed to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with their family.

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Brent had many opportunities to serve. He had a great testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and a love of others. He was a Branch President of congregations (twice), Bishop of congregations (three times), Elders Quorum President, High Counsilor, Counselor in two Stake Presidencies, and Stake President of the Tucson Arizona Rincon Stake for 10 years.

He has served in most of the auxiliaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and most recently as Ward High Priest Group Leader. He was blessed to work with Prophets, Apostles and General Authorities of the Church. Brent served, with his wife, a Proselyting Leadership Mission in the Washington DC North Mission and served in the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple for 5 years.

Brent taught some nutrition classes and counseled students, but most of his professional work was in research on feeding different grains, flaking grains, testing amino acids, etc. He wrote and published 100 scientific papers, was Secretary, Vice President and President of The American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) and President of FASFAS.

He was the Department Head of the Animal Science Department at the University of Arizona. He received many awards over the years for his service, research and teaching, among them The Fellow Award, Professor of the Year, and distinguished Service Award.

Brent was proud of his pioneer heritage, being blessed to have all of his great grandparents join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and cross the United States plains to Utah. He has collected histories, genealogies, drawn maps, and visited the countries they came from.

Brent is survived by his wife Cheri Laurel Peterson Theurer. His children are Cindy (deceased) and Daren Asay of Roy, UT; Mike and Jann Theurer of Orem, UT; Jeff Theurer of Orem, UT; Alan and Julie Theurer of Saint George, UT. His 9 wonderful grandchildren are Julie Asay Traver, Lisa Asay, Brittney Theurer Woodis, Brianna Theurer, Bradley Theurer, Brayden Theurer, Brevin Theurer, Brandon Theurer and Nik Theurer Gottfredson. His siblings are brother J. Michael (deceased), sister Karen T. Brooks (deceased), and sister Julie T. Petersen of Ogden, UT.
