Obituary

Clayton J Conn passed away Monday morning, February 24, 2020 surrounded by his wife and daughters at his home in Springville, Utah. He was born March 16, 1930 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. His parents are Jack L. Conn and Leona Ryset Conn. He had one sister, Jacqueline Conn Shively. He was raised in Idaho Falls where he played in the high school concert band and marching band. He proudly served as the drum major. He attended Idaho State College majoring in Architecture and was the drum major for the marching band as well. He met the love of his life, Marcia Anne Herbert, while he was attending Idaho State. They were married on December 29, 1949 in Rigby, Idaho and were later sealed in the Hawaii Temple on November 29, 1969. They started their married lives in Pocatello, Idaho where he finished his degree. He served in the Idaho Army National Guard until graduation when he was offered a commission in the Navy. He proudly served for 21 years in the Navy in various commands as an officer. He retired in 1974 at the rank of Lieutenant Commander and moved the family to Provo, Utah where he continued his education and got his post graduate degree as an Educational Specialist. He then worked at BYU counseling students and teaching "Effective Study Skills" which he had a major part in creating. He worked at BYU for several more years. He finally retired a second time and enjoyed life serving in the Provo Temple baptistry, two missions at the Provo MTC International Office, as well as many callings within in their wards. He served as a counselor in an MTC Senior Missionary branch as well as a Bishop on BYU campus. He loved traveling with Marcia and they had numerous vacations both stateside and abroad. They loved their time when the family lived in Hawaii for seven years and loved going back for visits. He loved having his daughters and their families come visit in the home that he designed in Springville and going to visit them, as well as taking family trips. He was an avid golfer (two verified holes in one) and loved bowling and was a Bowling Coach at BYU. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had a very strong testimony of the Gospel of which he always tried to be a living example. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past December. He is survived by his loving wife, Marcia; two daughters Sherri Lin Murray (William E. Murray Jr) and Debbie Anne Darais (Marcus A. Darais), 10 grandchildren, and 33 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister and her husband (James Shively), his father-in-law and mother-in-law (Elmer Morgan Herbert and Neva Mae Herbert), his sister-in-law (Leah Mildred Abbott) and her husband (Stephen Garth Abbott), four of his children: Melanie Kae and Michelle Lee (twins), Clayton Jay, and Christi Jo, William Clayton Murray (grandson) and Cooper Dallin Darais (great-grandson). The viewing will be March 4, 2020 at the Hobble Creek 8th Ward chapel, 2379 East 1100 South, Springville, Utah from 10:30 – 11:30 am. Funeral services will follow after the viewing at 12:00 noon. The graveside service for the burial will be in Idaho Falls, Idaho at the Rosehill Cemetery on March 5th at 2:00 pm with full military honors.
