Obituary

1929-2020 Darlene K. McNeil, 90, of Sunnyvale, California passed away at home on January 24, 2020. Darlene Esther Kmetzsch McNeil was born on February 28, 1929 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Leopold and Gertrude (Brock) Kmetzsch. She grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah and graduated from South High School in 1947. She married Warren Q McNeil on November 20, 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She completed a bachelor's degree in Sociology at the University of Utah and started a family. She had five children and then furthered her education and became an Elementary school teacher in the Santa Clara Unified School District in California. She retired in 1994. She had a beautiful singing voice. At age 9, she began performing duets with her sister, Phyllis. In high school and thereafter she enjoyed lead roles in musicals and was a talented performer. She was a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir between 1949-1952, and she continued singing in church most of her life. She was dedicated to her family and church. Darlene was a good mother and raised her children well. She liked to sew, knit, travel, read, and play games. She loved nature and learning new things. She was fascinated with the Space Shuttle program and had a large collection of memorabilia. She kept up with the Space Transportation System (STS) and was interested in Science. Darlene is survived by her five children, Dane (Marianne) McNeil, Jed (Laurel) McNeil, Shawn (Mike) Shafer, Regan (Ed) Arrington, and Allyson McNeil. She has 21 grandchildren, and 45 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren, who died on October 12, 2011, her parents, two brothers, two sisters, and one grandchild. Family and friends will gather on Saturday, February 15th at 11am in Orem, Utah at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home (646 E 800 N) followed by the interment next to her husband at Orem City Cemetery, Utah (1520 N 800 E).
