Obituary

Darrell Jack Weber was born on November 16, 1933 in a log cabin in Thornton Idaho - a fitting setting for a life filled with hard work, adventure, family, and faith. Growing up on a depression-era potato farm, he learned the values of love, frugality, ingenuity, and hard work from his parents John and Norma Weber. During World War II, Darrell was proud to earn a man's wage as a field hand at just 12 years of age to contribute to his family. His older sister, Deoine Lyman loved him and helped look after him throughout his childhood.

Darrell was both social and studious growing up. He was involved in scouts and 4-H, played high school basketball, served as seminary president and the Rigby High School student body president. After high school, he attended the University of Idaho. To pay for college, he worked on a chicken farm and served meals at the LDS House dormitory with his good friend Gary Bascom and spent the summers fighting wildfires as a smoke jumper out of McCall. Starting in 1953, he served an LDS mission in the North Central States, where he labored in Minnesota and Canada. He loved teaching the gospel and developed deep ties with those he worked with and served as an Assistant to the Mission President. Darrell went on to earn his BS and MS degrees from the University of Idaho in Agricultural Chemistry, followed by a PhD in Plant Pathology from UC Davis.

While in California, Darrell met the love of his life, Carolyn Foremaster. They were married in the St. George temple in 1962 and their life together took them to Madison Wisconsin; Houston Texas; and finally, Orem Utah, where Darrell joined BYU's Department of Botany in 1969. Over his career, Darrell taught many classes, wrote books, and published ~200 scientific papers. He was tremendously consistent in his ability to work and produce at a high level. He loved mentoring students and scientists from around the world.

To stay connected to his agricultural roots, Darrell purchased a cattle ranch on the Arizona Strip and an acre of land near the family home in Orem, where the family enjoyed an assortment of horses, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, and an orchard and garden. Darrell served for years as a scoutmaster, organizing epic campouts that created lasting memories and taught essential life lessons to the boys.

Darrell was an avid traveler, visiting every continent and almost every country in the world. He and the family had sabbaticals in Michigan and South Africa. He was very active in family history, writing numerous life stories and serving as a village coordinator in the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia. He actively served in the Golden Kiwanis Club for 20 years. A faithful and lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in various capacities including several bishoprics and high councils and as a temple worker. Darrell and Carolyn also loved serving an LDS humanitarian mission to Bucharest, Romania where they blessed many lives.

Darrell proudly achieved his goal of living to the age of 90. In his later years, he was an inspiring example of gratitude and positivity in the face of difficulty and aging. He was cared for by his loving wife, kind children, and many beloved healthcare workers, for whom we have the utmost gratitude. Darrell and Carolyn had seven children: Brad (deceased), Becky (Curtis Bingham), Brian, Todd (Laurel), Scott (Mardi), Jason, and Trent (deceased) (Cori), and 20 grandchildren.

Darrell Jack Weber is deeply missed and will be forever remembered for his kind heart, strong love of and devotion to his family and faith, and for his exemplary life of service. We are grateful for the blessing of eternal families and look forward to a happy reunion with him in the future.
