Obituary

Daryl John Tichy, 76, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2023, at his home in Orem, Utah. Daryl was born in East Cleveland, Ohio on May 29, 1947, to Lydia Parobek and John Tichy.

In high school, Daryl excelled in both academics and athletics and for many years held the school record in the pole vault. He later attended Brigham Young University, where he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and met his sweetheart, Judy Nicholas of Olney, Illinois. The two were married on October 8, 1970.

Daryl was a modern-day Renaissance man. His university studies focused on fine arts, zoology, and chemistry. After graduation, Daryl worked on the administrative staff at Brigham Young University, leaving in 2006 to assume the role of Vice President of Research and Development for a biomedical company that he co-founded. Daryl was the holder of at least 17 patents and was a 2010 Utah Genius Award recipient.

Daryl served in the Utah National Guard as a linguist and attained the rank of Captain. He retired from military reserve service in 1990. He was proficient in the Czech and Slovak languages, which he learned from his grandparents who immigrated to the United States from Slovakia. Daryl was also an exceedingly talented painter. His earlier works can be found in several prominent private collections throughout the country. Among other accolades, his paintings twice received the Best of Show award at the Utah State Fair.

Daryl enjoyed seeing the world with Judy. They logged endless miles cruising the backroads of America, visiting their children and grandchildren, taking care of their property on Prince Edward Island in Canada and the family cabin in Wasatch County, and experiencing many new places and cultures. Daryl particularly enjoyed visiting his ancestral homeland of Slovakia several times where he made new friends and reconnected with his extended family.

A wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, Daryl took a keen interest in his children's and grandchildren's lives and avidly attended their various sporting events, recitals, concerts, theater performances, art shows, and numerous other activities. If it was important to them, it was important to him. He also enjoyed serving in various church callings and assignments. He and Judy were among the first local church-service missionary couples called to serve in the BYU-Pathway program. While faithfully serving together, they made many dear friends and mentored and inspired students to grow spiritually while becoming more effective learners and gaining the skills needed to better provide for themselves and their families.

The family expresses thanks to his personal physician, Dr. Peter Duros, the dedicated caregivers from Bristol Hospice, Jay and Trevor, and his long-time personal aide Christina of Senior Partners. The children and grandchildren of Daryl and Judy also acknowledge Judy's selfless sacrifice and dedication as Daryl's primary caregiver throughout his courageous battle with cancer.

Daryl is survived by Judy, his wife of 53 years, and his six children, Jonathon (Milada), Angela (Scott Barth), Alayne (Braden Thomas), Jared (Carolina), Benjamin, and Jeffrey. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren, his sister Darlene (Warren Ellison), and many beloved friends, neighbors, and co-workers.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, November 16, 2023, at 3:00 pm at the chapel located at 225 East 200 North, Orem. The interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery. Those unable to attend may share condolences at www.walkersanderson.com.
