David Edwin
Murrell
Dec 13, 1940 — Oct 15, 2026
Orem
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of David Edwin Murrell on October 15, 2026, inOrem, Utah.
David was born on December 13, 1940, in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Eugene and PhyllisMurrell. He is the oldest of three children.
In his younger years David worked for his father at the family bakery and served in the Indiana Air Guard. In 1961 he started working at International Harvester, later Navistar, as a metallurgist. He went back to school and earned a master’s degree in chemistry from Indiana University. The company eventually transferred him from Fort Wayne, Indiana to Springfield, Ohio. He obtained another master’s degree in chemistry from Wright State and spent the remainder of his career as a chemist, retiring after 47 years.
David always had an adventurous nature, some calling him an adrenaline junkie. He loved to skydive, ski, rock climb, and scuba dive, and boy could he tell a story! The Misfits 10-man skydive jump team was formed and he was a proud member. He has jumped over 2,000 times and travelled all over the world with his band of brothers seeking adventure.
The adventure changed course on October 7, 1978, at DW Fish Day when David met Kay Albertson and her son John. From that moment, David and Kay were inseparable, and they married on July 6, 1979. Shortly after, David adopted John and their family of three was complete.
After Kay’s passing in 2020, David moved to Utah to be closer to John and his wife, Teresa. More adventures were had and the time passed so quickly.
David is survived by his son John and daughter-in-law Teresa, and his sister Linda Blackmer. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Kay, and his brother Doug Murrell.
There will be a Celebration of Life on Sunday, November 15, from 3:00pm - 8:00pm at the American Legion Post 47 on 601 Reed Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana. A private scattering of ashes will take place at the Fern Grotto in Kauai where David and Kay were married.
