Our beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather and Papa passed away January 26 , 2022 peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on his 81st birthday. David was born in Salt Lake City on January 26, 1941, the son of Max Willard Randall and Elizabeth Knorr Drechsel. He spent his boyhood years in Cedar City Utah. He graduated from Cedar High School and immediately after graduation began his service in the Utah National Guard.
At an early age he learned to set goals to use as a guide throughout his life. During his elementary school years, he fell in love with music, especially the Clarinet. Inspired by his high school mentor Gene Hellen he began a lifelong journey in music. Before entering Brigham Young University, he served a mission in the Eastern Canadian Mission where he learned to love and serve the Canadian people thus fulfilling his second goal. Upon his return from the mission field, he began his studies in music at Brigham Young University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in May of 1965. It was there he met and married his lifelong companion, Barbara Jean Possinger. They were married in the St. George Utah Temple on June 29, 1963. Shortly after graduation with their first child Gregory in tow, they headed to the University of Indiana at Bloomington where he received the degree of Master of Music with distinction on May 2, 1967. The following fall he began his doctoral program at the University of Iowa under the tutelage of Himie Voxman. On May 28, 1970, he received his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree. Before leaving Iowa for Provo another son Michael joined the family.
His number one goal, to be a music teacher, was fulfilled when he joined the faculty in the Department of Music at Brigham Young University in 1971 as a Professor of Clarinet. He served in that capacity for thirty-five years. Even when he served in administrative capacities in the College of Fine Arts and as the Director of the School of Music, his clarinet students remained his greatest joy and concern. When possible, he has followed their progress through the years and found delight in their success. He traveled the world teaching, giving concerts and holding clarinet workshops sharing his love for classical music. Everywhere he traveled he made lasting friendships. Many of these lasting friendships today are found among the wonderful teachers and musicians in the School of Music.
During the following years he and Barbara established their home in Orem adding Heather, Heidi and Holly to their family. They have told many that they have lived in the same little house on the corner with a white picket fence for forty-nine years. The picket fence surrounds David's Garden which he tended with loving care each spring, summer and fall. There was always enough to store for the family and share with the neighbors. The grape vines around the garden are famous for the grape juice they produced. During the winter his energy turned to his Laith. Many Christmas gifts, wedding gifts, kitchen tools and bowls have been created.
David has an unwavering faith in his Savior, Jesus Christ. Through the years David served in: Bishoprics, as Bishop, High Councils, Stake Presidency, Temple Presidency, Temple Sealer and Patriarch of the Sunset Heights Stake in Orem, Utah. From 2004-2007 he served as Mission president with his loving companion in the Canada Edmonton Mission. For three wonderful years he and sister Randall loved and taught their missionaries using Preach My Gospel and served the people in Alberta from Red Deer to Yellowknife in the NW Territory. After returning from Canada, they served as a missionary couple at the Heber Valley Girls Camp. Where they enjoyed teaching the young women and riding their 4-wheelers. From there they served in the Mt. Timpanogos Temple Presidency for 3 years. He went on to serve in the Provo Temple as a sealer and later became the Patriarch in the Orem Sunset Heights Stake.
David is survived by his wife Barbara Jean of fifty-nine loving and adventurous years, sons Gregory (Julie) and Michael (Angie), daughters Heather (Matthew), Heidi (James) and Holly (Joshua), brother William (Peggy), sisters Elise, Norma Jean (Wade) and Janice (Lloyd), 20 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, along with many other family and friends.
