Our beloved dad, grandpa, and great grandpa David Alexander Squires passed away on November 6, 2025, just 15 days after the passing of his wife of 62 years, Lois Johns Squires. He was born in Great Falls, Montana on November 22, 1934 to Georgia Rose Marsh and Calvin Lile Squires. He was raised on a dairy farm in Fairfield, Montana where he was responsible from an early age to milk 90 cows twice a day, even through the bitterly cold winters. He was active in track, baseball, football, and basketball. He joined the United States Air Force and served for several years before attending Brigham Young University where he participated in the ROTC and sang in the a cappella choir. It was there that he met and married Lois as well. Together they raised seven children in Orem, Utah.

After graduating in 1958 with a degree in History Education, he taught at Lincoln Jr High and then in 1974 he started teaching Secondary Education and Creativity for more than 30 years at Brigham Young University. Creativity was more than just a class to teach, it was a way of life. He was constantly inventing new games and testing them out on his kids at home. He also designed and published the game Blank E T Blank. He was the ultimate "out of the box" thinker; no problem was considered unsolvable, it just had to be looked at from the right angle.

He was an advocate for individualized learning and he developed a "thinking styles" test to help people understand their own unique style of learning.

He was a lifelong Utah Jazz and BYU sports fan. For more than 40 years he attended nearly every single BYU home basketball and football game. He was no fair weather fan. When BYU basketball was suffering through their worst season, he was one of the few fans to still attend nearly every game. It was an unfortunate twist of fate that the only home game he missed that year happened to be the only game they won during the entire season!

He was a steady and calm influence in the lives of his family, students, and friends. He had seemingly unlimited patience and his children would be hard pressed to think of many moments when he raised his voice much less showed anger. He had a quick wit and was a master of puns and wordplay. Trips to the zoo were always memorable for his kids as he had an uncanny ability to "talk" to all sorts of animals and to get playful and funny reactions out of them.

He was a man of faith who lived an authentic life and who served others in many capacities over the course of his life, including serving as the LDS Bishop of the BYU 92nd ward. He was an unwavering example of moral strength, patience, and quiet humility to all those who knew him.

David is survived by his seven children: Alan (Malise) Squires, Russ (Karen) Squires, Craig (Ellen) Squires, Diana (Treaver) Hodson, Denise (John) Mathews, Darren (Erika) Squires, and Linda (Kurt) Olsson as well as 31 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his Mother and Father, his wife Lois, brothers Don, Calvin, Ramon, Gene, sisters Lady and Alyce "Kay" as well as his grandson, Jeffrey Trewartha, and his granddaughter, Cassandra Squires.

Services: All services will be held jointly with those of his recently passed wife, Lois. A viewing will be held on Friday November 14th from 6-8 pm at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 E 800 N, Orem, Utah. The funeral will be held on Saturday, November 15th at 11:30 am at the LDS church at 13768 S 6400 W, Herriman, Utah. A viewing will precede the funeral from 10-11 am.
