IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Douglas Gordon
Garbe
May 2, 1936 – January 31, 2025
Douglas (Doug) Gordon Garbe passed away at the age of 88 on January 31, 2025, at his home in Orem, Utah. He was born on May 2, 1936, to Frank and Blanche Garbe in their Manti, Utah home. He is preceded in death by his wife Jane Olson and daughter Mary. He is survived by children Daniel, David, Deborah, Diane, Duane, and Delinda, their spouses, and families.
Doug enjoyed growing up in Manti around relatives and cherished friends. Once Doug's friend, you will always be Doug's friend. He played in the school band, worked at the cannery, and worked on the family farm with his dad and grandfather. He graduated from Manti High School, serving as Student Body President. He really looked forward to each class reunion and loved maintaining friendships.
Doug relished watching BYU sports and was an enthusiastic fan. He enjoyed music, visits, phone calls, letters, and Zoom meetings with loved ones. Doug was a meticulous record keeper and had a very sharp memory. He loved visiting with EVERYBODY. In fact, his nickname was "Gabby Garbe." His family would like to extend deepest gratitude to all those who gave of their time with visits, phone calls, and hours of thoughtful service.
As a young man, Doug served a full-time LDS Mission to the North Central States. While there, he was able to meet long lost relatives, an unexpected blessing. Doug served in the National Guard and was proud to serve his country. He graduated from Snow College, attended Utah State, earned his Bachelor's degree at Brigham Young University (BYU), his Master's Degree at University of Oregon, and his Ph.D. at University of Texas at Austin. Doug's teaching career started at BY High in 1963. He retired in 1998 teaching Mathematics and Math Education at BYU. Doug and Jane joyfully served a Senior mission in the Portland, Oregon Mission teaching Institute. For years, Doug and Jane served as temple workers at the Mount Timpanogos Temple. Doug is thankful for his membership and service in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
His family would like to thank his amazing neighbors and other earthly angels who are too numerous to name. Norma Maldonado was instrumental in his care for the last several years and cared for Jane during her last years at home. Thank you. We are so grateful to all who brought joy to his life.
