Douglas “Dug” John Pusey, 71, passed away at his home in Provo on August 18, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Throughout his battle with colon cancer, he faced each day with faith, humor, and courage before returning to his heavenly home.
Doug was born on June 21, 1955, in American Fork to Earl Fisher Pusey and Blanche Gardner Pusey. The youngest of five children, Doug grew up alongside his siblings Mike, Carol, Robert, and JoAnn. Even from a young age, he had a fun, goofy sense of humor and loved any chance to make a good pun. He enjoyed a childhood filled with many adventures, including summer vacations exploring Bryce Canyon, Zion, the Grand Canyon, California, and Yellowstone. He also worked hard to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. While attending Orem High School, Doug played the cornet in the school band.
After high school, Doug served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Japan Fukuoka Mission. While serving, he grew to deeply appreciate the people, culture, and food of Japan. After returning home, Doug married Judy Everitt, and they attended Brigham Young University (BYU) together. His love for BYU continued throughout his life, and he would proudly “bleed blue” whenever the Cougars played football.
After graduating, Doug began his teaching career at Park City High School and later taught at The Carden-Lee School and Canyon View Junior High (CVJH). During this time, his sons Nate and Matt were born. After a few years of teaching in Utah, Doug and his family moved to Machida-shi, Tokyo, Japan. There, he served as a school principal, developed English-language programs for Japanese businessmen, and oversaw the school’s teachers. While living in Japan, his daughter Angela was born.
Four years later, Doug and his family returned to Utah, where he resumed teaching Earth Systems and Japanese at Canyon View Junior High. Fondly known as “Mooster Pusey,” he taught and inspired hundreds of students throughout his career, making them laugh along the way. His contagious enthusiasm brought science to life in his classroom. A gifted educator, Doug received numerous awards throughout his career, including Utah’s Earth Science Teacher of the Year.
Doug later returned to his alma mater, BYU, to earn his MA in Teacher Education. Later in his career, he continued teaching at CVJH while also serving as an adjunct professor at Utah Valley University, where he trained educators in effective teaching methods. After 27 years of teaching at CVJH, Doug retired in 2018. Even in retirement, he continued sharing his love of learning as assistant director at the Christa McAuliffe Space Education Center.
Beyond the classroom, Doug was a lifelong collector who relished learning about the world. Some of his largest collections included coins, stamps, personally hunted fossils, and leather-bound classic novels. He also amassed an impressive assortment of moose memorabilia, thoughtfully gifted by students, family, and friends.
Doug was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved his Savior and continually put his trust in Him throughout all aspects of his life.
In 2021, Doug became reacquainted with Robyn Maag, whom he first met in high school. She became his sweetheart, and they were married on July 20, 2022. They were later sealed for time and all eternity on February 14, 2025. Together, Doug and Robyn shared many wonderful adventures and built a life filled with love, humor, faith, and joy.
Doug is survived by his loving wife, Robyn; his children, Nate (Karen), Matt (Michelle), and Angela (Miles); his stepchildren, Ryan (Jane), Kelsie (Cody), and Kyle (Hanna); his siblings, Carol (Bud), Mike (Mary), and JoAnn (Michael); and 19 wonderful grandchildren.A viewing will be held on Tuesday, August 25, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home (646 E 800 N, Orem, UT 84097). An additional viewing will be held Wednesday, August 26, from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at the Lakeside 10th Ward Chapel (2225 W 620 N, Provo, UT 84601).
