Obituary

Douglas Stewart Satterfield

April 16, 1944 – July 30, 2025

Douglas Stewart Satterfield, beloved husband, father, brother, veteran, and doctor of optometry, passed away on July 30, 2025, after courageously battling acute myeloid leukemia. He was 81 years old.

Doug was born on April 16, 1944, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Homer and Marguerite Satterfield. He was the second oldest of six siblings. He is preceded in death by his beloved older sister, Linda Bearup Satterfield, who passed away in 2023. He is survived by his siblings: Steven Satterfield (Anita), Brian Scott Satterfield (Dana), Margo Satterfield, and Bruce Satterfield (Carol), who all carry forward his memory with love.

Doug married Adele Marie Gander on September 8, 1967. Together, they raised six children: Tara Sue Satterfield, Tyler Douglas Satterfield (Carrie), Tiffany Marie Satterfield (Eliel Johnson), Timothy James Satterfield, Tristyn Emily Satterfield (Brady Aydelotte), and Ashley Tamryn Satterfield. Doug was a devoted father who instilled in his children a sense of curiosity, service, and strength. Though Doug and Adele later divorced in 2007, their shared family legacy remains strong, carried on by their children and 16 grandchildren.

After graduating from Brigham Young University with a degree in physics, Doug joined the United States Air Force and served from 1969 to 1973 as a fighter pilot, flying the F-106 Delta Dart. He later pursued a career in optometry, earning his Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from Pacific University College of Optometry. Doug returned to military service as an optometrist in the United States Navy, where he faithfully served until his retirement in 1996.

Following his military service, Doug practiced in several places in Utah Valley, where he cared for the vision and well-being of his community with skill and integrity.

Doug later married MaryJane Luzano Simon on February 14, 2017, and together they shared a quiet chapter in his later years. Many will remember playing Rummikub or the Filipino card game Tongit for hours with Doug and Jane at their home, or at one of the parks in Orem. Jane cared for Doug steadfastly through his cancer battle and her devotion and love are so deeply appreciated by all who loved Doug.

A man of honor, intellect, and dry wit, Doug was deeply committed to his family, and the country he served. His legacy lives on in the lives of his wife, his children, 16 grandchildren, siblings, and all who had the privilege to know him.

Services to celebrate Doug's life will be held on August 22, 2025 with burial services at 1:00pm at the Orem City Cemetery, followed directly by a celebration of life at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home in Orem.
