Obituary

Earlene Kaye Buckner Massey, 75, of Orem, Utah passed away peacefully on February 6, 2023.

Earlene was born June 14, 1947 on the opening day of fishing season. Her dad came down the mountain quickly to their home in Ephraim and began the 3 hour drive to Provo, Utah where she was born at Utah Valley Hospital.

Earlene was born to Earl Dell Buckner and Hilda Rowley Buckner both deceased. As a little girl her older brothers Ron and Gerry would take her on their newspaper routes to help collect the newspaper fees. The customers called her the girl with the million-dollar smile. She was miss congeniality one year in the Provo beauty pageant.

She and Michael Massey were high school sweethearts at Provo High. Earlene said she married the "love of her life". Soon after he returned from his mission, they were married in the Salt Lake City Temple. Together they worked hard to provide for and raise 6 children. She liked to be perfectly organized, and it only seemed right to have 3 boys and 3 girls. Her children were her true joy.

Earlene was a registered nurse who worked for 30 years at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. She was a charge nurse in the operating room and worked on special teams units with heart and neurosurgery. She loved being needed and in the thick of important things that required her attention. She didn't like to be bored for even a few minutes. When her children were young, she worked evenings. She managed to keep the house clean before she ran off for her evening shift, and often managed to put homemade brownies or cookies on the counter for the kids to enjoy when they got home from school. She loved to serve her family. She even found time somehow to work on her hobbies of cooking, canning, sewing, and quilting.

She loved to read, and she enjoyed writing. She wrote a series of "Charlie the Caterpillar" stories for her children and enjoyed writing poetry for herself "The Woman that I Want to Be". She loved to make people laugh.

She suffered a great deal of pain and illness in her later life but tried to get by and keep others happy.

Earlene was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings throughout her life and worked hard to set a good example for her children and grandchildren. Earlene and Michael served a service mission for the church working at the Provo LDS employment center assisting and training individuals to get quality employment.

Earlene will be missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, and is survived by her sweet husband Michael F.D. Massey, two brothers Ronald D. Buckner of West Valley, UT and Gerald Buckner (Shirley) of Hurricane, UT; her Sister Dianne Bates (Dan) of Provo, UT; Her 6 Children Stephen (Barbara) Massey, of South Carolina; Douglas (Heather) Massey, Jeanene (Robert) Brunson, and David (Lorisa) Massey of Utah; and Rebecca (Garth) Backman, and Jennifer (Carlos) Carrasco of Arizona. She also leaves behind 22 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
