IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Eden A
Thompson
April 9, 1945 – February 3, 2025
It is with the heaviest of hearts that I report the passing of my wife Eden Abad Thompson ("Edie") on February 3, 2025 after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.
She was born on April 9, 1945, in Manila, The Philippines to Napoleon and Purificacion Abad.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, and both of her brothers (Raul and Noel). Edie is survived by me, her husband of 52 years, Douglas Thompson, our daughter, Jennifer Hinsdale (husband Jeffrey) and our grandson Brodie Duprey. She is also survived by her sisters Alma San Juan (husband Armando, deceased) and Amor Buenaventura (husband Luis) and their children and grandchildren. In addition to numerous other relatives in the Philippines and the United States, she is survived by her aunt Pilar "Nene" Melo who lived with us for many years to help us while Jennifer was growing up.
Edie received her bachelor's degree from Far Eastern University in Manila and her master's degree from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA where we met. She taught mathematics at many different levels in Pennsylvania, Illinois and Utah, retiring in 2012 as a tenured faculty member at Utah Valley University. In addition, she served in an engineering capacity for Ameritech in Illinois.
Edie had always been one to take the world head on. When she left Manila for Lehigh in 1968, she had never been off the island of Luzon, never had driven a car or even been on a bike. Once at Lehigh, she learned to drive, bought a car and began dragging her new-found Filipino friend Theresa all over the east coast.
Edie and I made sure we had an active life together through international and domestic traveling, tennis, golf, skiing, snow shoeing and hiking. Often she would call me downstairs because she found an available unit for our time share and wanted to book it now! Next thing I know, we're hiking (and snowshoeing) In Montana in the spring! It was cold and windy but we had a good time. We always did. I wouldn't trade those times for anything in the world.
But, early in 2023, there was a lump on her back near her shoulder that, after extensive analysis and second and third opinions, turned out to have started in her bile duct and she was diagnosed with stage-4, incurable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.
But true to her nature, Edie took the cancer head on, struggling through 5 chemotherapy regimens over the next two years. Throughout the ordeal, Edie kept her spirits up by making sure we always had planned something for her to look forward to. We travelled to Amsterdam and the Rhine, visited her family in the Philippines and cruised to Sicily and the Amalfi Coast just this past September.
She's the most courageous person I've ever known.
Her spirited participation in on-line support sessions of the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation caught the attention of the pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca that manufactures an immunotherapy drug that Edie used. They did an all-day film shoot near the Sundance Resort in early 2024. You can find the excerpt of the filming on YouTube by searching for "Eden's Journey with Imfinzi".
Services for Edie are being managed by the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home at 646 East 800 North in Orem. There will be a viewing and informal memorial service starting at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 15. Guests are invited to say a few words at the service.
In lieu of flowers, Edie asked that you consider a donation to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation at Cholangiocarcinoma.org.
