Obituary

Edmond Preston "Pres" Hyatt, age 95, died October 21, 2019, in Orem, Utah. He was born November 15, 1923, to Clarence E. and Belle Edmonds Hyatt, in Joliet, Illinois. He served as an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers during WWII, where he met his wife Ora Mae Sorensen, who died in 2017. Pres received his BS and MS at the Rolla Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy and then taught geology at BYU. He received his PhD in Ceramic Engineering at the University of Utah, and then managed ceramic operations at Electro Ceramics, Inc, Salt Lake City; at Centralab, Globe Union, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Solonix, Newbury Park, California. As a private consultant, he worked with technical ceramic companies around the world. In 1979, he moved to Orem and established EPH Engineering Associates, Inc., which continued the consulting business and made ceramic production equipment for clients worldwide. Pres was active in Scouting throughout his life – one of the first Cub Scouts when that program began in the 1930s; earned the Eagle Scout rank; helped form one of the first Explorer Posts in Illinois; and as an adult, served as a unit, district, and council-level Scouter in five different Councils. He twice served on the Young Men General Board of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and helped with multiple national Jamborees, Church Scout Encampments, and Explorer Conferences. His Scouting legacy includes seven sons, 27 grandsons, and multiple great-grandsons who have also earned the Eagle rank. Multiple family members have received the Silver Beaver Award, including himself and his wife. From the time he joined the Church with his parents and brother and sister in Joliet, Pres served faithfully in the Church, first as a group leader in the Army, a Branch President in Rolla, Missouri, as a Scoutmaster and Explorer leader, and in bishoprics, high councils, and stake presidencies. With his wife, he served as Mission President in the Quezon City, Philippines Mission, 1989-1992. Together, they also served as missionaries in the Cape Town, South Africa and Sidney, Australia missions; at the Provo MTC, and at the Family History Library at BYU. He had a love of science, family history, serving in the Church, and getting his family together for work projects and activities. He was a logical man and carefully poured his time, energy, and resources into those things that were of most importance to him, particularly his family. He has left a magnificent legacy of hard work, integrity, and testimony that will bless his posterity forever. Pres is survived by his sister-in-law Mildred Hersman, brother-in-law Rey Sorensen; his children Nancy (Stephen) Hardman, Carol (Wolf) Zappe, Theodore (Teri) Hyatt, Thomas (Danielle) Hyatt, Beverly (Jonathan) Neville, Edward (Grace) Hyatt, Frederick (JoEllen) Hyatt, Herbert (Mary) Hyatt, James (Raili) Hyatt, and Andrew (Carla) Hyatt; 55 grandchildren,158 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. His younger brothers and sister, one granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 26, at 11:00 am at the Sharon Park 5th Ward building, 225 E. 200 N., Orem. Visitations will be Friday, October 25, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm and 9:30 to 10:30 am Saturday at the Sharon Park 5th Ward building. Burial will be in the Provo City Cemetery.
