Eliza Ann Powell Middleton Porter, age 99, died September 8, 2023 at her home in Provo, Utah.
Eliza was born on August 1, 1924 at Winter Quarters, Carbon County, Utah, the 6th child of Robert Alderson Middleton, Sr. and Esther Quilter. She attended school in Henrieville, Cannonville, Tropic and Panguitch, Utah, and college at Dixie College in St. George, Utah.
Eliza worked as a computer key-punch operator at Hill Air Force Base, Utah during WWII, and worked at the Los Angeles Port of Embarkation in San Pedro, CA. Later in Idaho, she taught reading and other skills to elementary school students in the resource room.
After the war, Eliza married Lyle George Porter on July 25, 1946 in the St. George Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She met and fell in love with Lyle when she lived in Hatch, Utah while in high school in Panguitch, Utah.
Over the next 19 years, Lyle and Eliza lived in Clearfield, Richfield and Salt Lake City, Utah before moving to southeast Idaho for employment opportunities. Eliza and Lyle later settled in Iona, Idaho where Eliza lived for 39 years. After Lyle died, Eliza moved to Provo, Utah in 2006 to be close to family.
Throughout her life Eliza did a lot of family history, and compiled and published her personal history. She also loved to travel, and visited many places including England, Australia, Germany, Egypt and Israel. But her primary interest was her family.
Eliza was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is survived by all six of her children including Gary Porter (Sheryl), Lanny Porter (Ruth), Lorraine ("Lori") Clegg (Gordon), Evan Porter (Laurie), Kristine ("Kris") Baxter (Larry) and Brian Porter (Liz), and by 28 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Eliza was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Porter who died in 1985, her parents and her five siblings.
Funeral services will be Saturday September 16th, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. in the Provo Utah West Stake center at 2530 West 200 South, Provo Utah 84601 with Bishop Robert Barrus officiating. At this location, a viewing will take place starting at 11:30 a.m., and the burial will be in the lona Cemetery at 4962 1st Street, Idaho Falls, Idaho on Tuesday September 19 at 1pm
