Ellen Elnora Nelson Axelson, beloved mother grandmother and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on April 27th 2026 at the age of 85. She was born January 7th, 1941 in Provo Utah to Elmer E Nelson and Birdie Buchanan. Ellen was the fifth of six children and the last sibling to remain on this earth.
She attended Provo high graduating in1959. In May of 1960 she married Bryant Day in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. After their wedding they moved to SLC where Bryant was employed and they later moved to Bountiful Utah. They had three children together. After a marriage of 10 years, they divorced. Ellen worked very hard as a single mother and after a year alone the family moved to Provo to be closer to grandparents. Ellen got a job with the State of Utah as a daycare licensing worker. She loved the job and worked there for 10 years. A year after the family moved to Provo, Ellen met her second husband Arthur (Bart) Axelson, and they were married in 1975. Four years later they bought a home and moved to Lindon Utah. Ellen got a job at Challenger as a preschool teacher and worked there for two years.
Bart and Ellen spent many wonderful years together. They loved to go to Deer Creek Reservoir and spent summers windsurfing on the lake and winters snow skiing in the Utah Mountains. They were able to travel to Mexico, National Parks and many states until Bart's death in 2002. Ellen started attending Orem Senior Center where she loved to dance, and there, she met Peter Sorenson. They were married the following year in the Timpanogos LDS Temple. They spent the next 10 years doing temple work and enjoying visiting family until Peter’s death in 2013.
Ellen’s family was the light of her life. She had eleven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren and most adored spending time with them all. There was nothing better for her than to hold a new grandbaby. Music was one of Ellen’s greatest loves. She loved playing the piano for other’s enjoyment which she did for many years at her assisted living facility. She also loved singing and making up silly songs to sing to anyone whom she came into contact with. Ellen was very creative and over the years enjoyed doing many art projects. She made several porcelain dolls, ceramics, oil painting, and loved crocheting,
Ellen is survived by, her sister-in-law Shyrma Nelson, her children Terry Lee (Kevin) Young, Tamara Ellen (James) Anton and Robert Bryant (Michelle) Day, and her grandchildren, Angela Reynolds, Aubrey Johnson, Brandon Young, Brent Young, Amber Bacigalupi, Chelsie Ghaffari, Kameron Anton, Dallin Day, Alyssa Galmeister, Dawson Day and Daxton Day, and sixteen great grandchildren.
The Family would like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to Summerfield Retirement Center for the many years of wonderful care.
Memorial Services will be held on Monday May the 4th 2026, with a viewing at 9:30am and funeral services at 11:00 am. At The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building located at 865 West 1000 North Orem Ut 84057. Interment to follow at the Provo City Cemetery.
