Elmer Olaf 'Junior" Johnson
December 5, 1930 – Sept 24, 2021
He raged against the dying light, but in the end went gently into that good night. We mourn the passing of our father and grandfather, Elmer. Elmer passed away at home on September 24, 2021. Elmer was born in Hanna, Wyoming on December 5, 1930 to Elmer John and Nellie Olafson Johnson. His father, a Swedish immigrant, was a lumberjack who hand cut ties for the nation's railroads, so Elmer enjoyed an adventurous boyhood in Wyoming's Wind River Range, living in a one room cabin and attending school in a one room schoolhouse. He was only able to complete an eight grade education, but was a hard worker who never let his lack of education prevent him from achieving a good life.
He met the love of his life, Gwendlyn Smith, in the fall of 1951 and they were married in Elko, Nevada on December 26, 1951. They were the proud parents of six children, Alan (Reenie) Johnson, Orem; Chris (David) Johnson-Tuma, Ogden; Jim (Kathy) Johnson, Albuquerque; Beckie (Liem) Le, Orem; Vickie (Richard) Leroy, Lindon; and John (Cheri) Johnson, Lindon. Elmer and Gwen raised their family in Orem. He spent most of his adult life as a tree trimmer for Davey Tree Company and was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Elmer and Gwen enjoyed camping with their family and built a log cabin overlooking the Bear River in the Uintahs where they spent many happy weekends enjoying the mountain scenery and wildlife.
He, along with Gwen, loved his Yorkies who provided him companionship through his declining years. Gwen passed away in February 2021 and Elmer, brokenhearted, longed to join her. And so, at last, they are together again. Elmer is survived by his six children, 22 grandchildren, and 45 great-grandchildren, and his brother, John. He is predeceased by Gwen, his parents, his brother Raymond, and three grandchildren.
The Johnson Family would like to thank all of the care workers who have helped Elmer over the past several months, Rocky Mountain Personal Care, Tina, Carla, Josh, Glen, and Eliana. Their assistance has been invaluable. The family plans on holding a private graveside service at a later date.
