Esther Risenmay Johnson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away on May 18, 2019 at the age of 90. She was born on April 4, 1929 in Woodville, Idaho to George H. and Gladys Jensen Risenmay. Her mother passed away a few hours after her birth and her father later married Jane Lufkin. She grew up on the family farm, one of thirteen children, attended elementary school in Woodville, and then high school in Shelley.
After graduation she attended the Budge School of Nursing, which was associated with Utah State University in Logan. It was there that she met her husband, Joseph Junior Johnson. They were married in the Logan Temple on June 11, 1948 and a few days after the wedding, Joseph left to serve a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Hawaii. Esther continued her nursing studies, but illness forced her to withdraw before completing her degree.
Reunited in 1950, they built their life together and raised five children, living in homes in Layton, Centerville, and Vernal, Utah and Arvada, Colorado. They retired to Orem in order to be nearer to family.
In addition to raising her children, Esther worked at various jobs including as a dental assistant and for the Mines Safety Health Administration. While living in Vernal, she served as PTA president, leading the effort to pass a needed bond to build a new junior high school. She had a deep faith and enjoyed serving in various callings in the Church throughout her life. After their retirements, she and Joseph served a temple mission in Chicago, Illinois.
She loved books and reading, often reading a book a day. She kept a garden and fruit trees, canning her produce in the fall as she had done as a girl on the farm. She especially loved to spend time with friends and family, a family that has grown to 21 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children Susan (Michael) Dynes, Julie (David) Hepworth, Mark Johnson, Karl (Linda) Johnson, and Marie (Dean) Huffaker, her grandchildren and great grandchildren and siblings Dee (Emmajean) Risenmay, Dona (Willard) Price, and Marian (Bob) Kelley. Her husband Joseph, parents, other siblings, daughter-in-law Mariolina, and great-grandson Leo predeceased her.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at 11 am in the Vermont Chapel at 400 East and 400 North in Orem. A viewing will be held at 9:45 -10:45 am prior to the service at the church.
Interment will be in Orem City Cemetery, 1520 North 800 East, Orem. Condolences may be offered and memories shared online at www.walkersanderson.com .
Poem by Esther Risenmay Johnson
With gratitude I come to Thee
Filled with the hope of eternity
Thou hast ever blessed my way
As I face challenges day by day
The beauty of Thy creations surround me
May I ever seek to follow Thee
May Thy love become a part of me
