Evan Douglas Francis, of Orem Utah, died peacefully in his sleep, Sunday, April 17, 2022. He was born the tenth of eleven children at home in Lake Shore, Utah on September 17, 1935. He was the son of Samuel Evan Francis and Barbara Ferguson. He was married to Mary Elaine Wing on June 16, 1955 in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were parents to 5 boys.
Evan grew up in Springville, Utah, attended and graduated from Springville High School. Went on to attend and graduate from Brigham Young University and from Case Western School of Dentistry in Cleveland Ohio in 1960.
After Dental School, he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Kentucky, Nebraska, Germany, Vacaville, CA, Guam, Georgia, Florida, Hawaii and Riverside, CA. He also got an advanced degree in Prosthodontics at USC while living in Glendale, CA.
In March of 2000, very unexpectedly, Mary his beloved wife of 45 years passed away. After her death, he met and married Kay Madsen. The Madsen family welcomed Evan lovingly into their homes and lives. They served a mission together in New Zealand. For the 22 years they were married they were BYU Cougar's biggest fans. They were living in Legacy Village in Provo, UT at the time of his passing.
Evan is survived by his wife, Kay; his five sons and their wives: Greg and Sandra of Bozeman, MT, Marc and Christine of Orange County, CA, Dave and Lori, of Orem, UT, Kenny and Julie of Hermosa Beach, CA, Kevan and Christian of Loveland, CO. He is also survived by brothers Rulon, Sam and sister Carol, his 15 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Kay's children, Mary Kaye (Bill) Welch of Washington, UT, Peter (Laura) Madsen, of Orem, UT, Dale Madsen, of Geneva, Switzerland, Jeffrey (Susan) Madsen, of Orem, UT, Andrew (Emily) Madsen, of Cedar Hills, UT, Michael (Jennifer) Madsen, of Rexburg, ID, Jonathan Madsen, of Salt Lake City, UT, 25 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was proceeded in death by his wife Mary, brothers, Marvin, Reed, Rell and sisters, Deon, Lila, Marian, Maurine and his grandson, Samuel Evan Francis.
Evan served in the Church as Bishop 4 times and in 3 Stake Presidencies. He loved helping people and was always the first one on the doorstep to offer his help to those in need. He served in the Air Force for 30 years gaining the rank of full Colonel by the time he was 40 years old. At 49 years old he had held the position of Base Dental surgeon several times and Hospital commander. At his retirement in 1990, he was awarded the legion of Merit Medal, which is the highest award for an officer in non-combat service.
Evan's large family played a vital role in his life and he firmly believed in the plan of Salvation.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at 11 a.m. with a viewing for friends and family from 9:30-10:30 prior to the service, Canyon View 4th Ward chapel, 762 East, 1200 North, Orem, UT. Burial will follow at Orem City Cemetery.
