Obituary

Fay Jean Corey was born February 22, 1933, in Globe, Arizona, the daughter of Charles Harry Corey, Jr. and Maxina Ellalee Mecham. She passed from this life on October 15, 2023.

As a child she lived in Cripple Creek, Colorado, Salina, Utah, Globe and Flagstaff, Arizona and various other small towns scattered throughout the Southwest. She graduated from Flagstaff Highschool in 1950 as a member of the National Honor Society, Prom Queen, heartthrob, and general all-around popular student.

She attended college at what is now Northern Arizona University. There she met Dayle Wilson Wright, who she married on August 3, 1951, in Tucumcari, New Mexico at the home of her Aunt and Uncle. Fay and Dayle settled down in the small mining town of Hayden, Arizona. They had four children together, Daylene, Randall, Ward, and Cynthia.

Fay became a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1961.

In 1969 the family moved to New Jersey. In 1972, to escape the unfamiliar environment of the east, they moved to Colorado, where they were close to Fay's family.

In the early 1970's Fay decided she wanted to do more with her life, and so she pursued her lifelong dream to become a nurse. She graduated from nursing school in the spring of 1973. She worked as a nurse at a variety of hospitals until 1994, when she was forced to retire due to an injury sustained while trying to save a very large patient from falling.

Fay and Dayle divorced in 1988.

Fay served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. There, she met Richard Connolly. They married on January 23, 1999.

Fay joined a new family who took to her as if she were truly a mother and grandmother to them.

Indeed, that was a theme in Fay's life—the ability to be accepted and accepting of the people around her. She was always willing to take in a stray of the human variety: those who needed love and understanding. She was, however, no pushover. She stood up for what was right and could be a formidable opponent to those who took advantage of others.

Fay served several more missions for the LDS church with her husband Richard.

Fay wasn't afraid to try new things. She fly-fished, played bridge, beat us all at cribbage, Splendor, and Super Mario Brothers.

As a mother, long before nursing school, Fay treated the various wounds of childhood with compassion, both physical and mental, and helped raise, not just her own children, but her children's friends as well.

Fay was an excellent cook, and she wasn't afraid to try new things in the kitchen: prickly pear cactus jelly, pomegranate jelly, home-made tamales, cheese boats, and a host of other exotic foods. She could be down to earth with her cooking, as well. Her favorite was simply pinto beans stewed with ham hock and served with fresh baked bread or cornbread. It was her Christmas kitchen, however, that stood out. There, she created memories that will last a lifetime for her children, grandchildren, and all the others who benefited from her holiday culinary skills.

Though Fay lived a long life, it was still too short for those of us who knew and loved her.

Fay is survived by her children, Daylene Fay Wright, Randall Wilson Wright (spouse Dawn), Ward Lee Wright (spouse Mary Beth), and her favorite, Cynthia Lee Frazier (spouse Riley); her stepchildren, Rick Connolly and Diane Connolly, Todd and Julie Schull, Karl and Jeri Ann Schull, Traci and Bruce Heppler, Kurt and Kirsten Schull, Richard and Lucia Schull, Kent and Kim Schull, Jonathan and Nicki Schull, and thirty-nine grandchildren and thirty-three great-grandchildren, including Leo Connolly Wright whose birth is imminent (as in today). Fay was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Maxi, her husband, Richard, a brother, Bert Corey and a sister Joyce (Jodie) Hopkins.
