Fay Etherington Steele, of Orem, died peacefully in her home on November 27, 2017. She was born November 19, 1927 in Salt Lake City to Mary Bartholomew and Robert Etherington. She was raised in Santaquin, where she attended Santaquin Elementary School. She graduated from Payson High School in 1945 and attended Chilicothe Business College in Chilicothe, Missouri. She married Larry L. Steele on November 25, 1946. He died on May 10, 1972. Fay had a profound love for her family, friends and neighbors. She also had a deep and abiding faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which was her sanctuary, and which sustained her throughout her life. She served an LDS mission in the Mississippi, Jackson Mission once her children were launched. She was particularly devoted to genealogy. She had various ward and stake callings over the course of her life, including 20 years working in Cub Scouts. She received the Silver Beaver Scouting award. She worked for Employment Security Services and for the U.S. Forest Service, where she would visit schools in the company of Smokey the Bear, to talk to the students about the dangers of forest fires. In her seventies she worked with the Foster Grandparent Program, tutoring elementary students in reading at Sharon and Windsor Elementary Schools. Fay was unfailingly upbeat and positive; one granddaughter called her "eternally happy." She had a wonderful sense of humor and the ability to see the good in everybody. She was, without question, the sweetest, kindest, most supportive, most patient person any of us has ever known. Fay's family would like to thank Karen Burris at Homefront Personal Care, Mountainlands, and her hospice team at A Plus Home Care & Hospice, including Dr. Sean Curzon, hospice nurse Becky Nelson, and Jason Yokota. In particular, we would like to express our eternal gratitude to Sheila Kepo'o, Fay's caregiver for many years, who loved Fay and took such extraordinary care of her. Her care allowed Fay to fulfill her wish of staying in her home. Fay is survived by her seven children: Sandra Rippee (Reno, NV), Debra (Merlin) Makin (Orem), Steven (Ann) Steele (Mesquite, NV), Jeffrey (Michele) Steele (Delta), Linda (David) Schweidel (Berkeley, CA), Jana (John) Thomas (Orem) and David (Becky) Steele (Springville), twenty-six grandchildren and thirty-six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Jack Etherington, of Payson. She had one sister, Gladys Limb, who predeceased her. Words cannot express how much we love and appreciate her and how much we will miss her. Her spirit lives on in the hearts and minds of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A viewing will be held Friday, December 1, 2017 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the LDS Chapel, 1120 East 600 North, Orem. Funeral Services will be Saturday December 2, 2017 at the LDS Church at 670 East 800 North, Orem with a viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the same location. Condolences may be offered to the family online at WalkerSanderson.com. In lieu of flowers the family wishes for donations to be given to the LDS Educational Fund.
