Obituary

Florence Wiseman Lawson (Floss) passed away in Provo, Utah on March 23, 2023 at the age of 103.

Floss was born in Bountiful, UT to Martha Jane Garrett and David Wiseman on Oct 25, 1919. She was the fifth of eight children who all spent their happy summers on their family farm in Bountiful, raising livestock and selling the produce they sowed such as; cantelope, beans, peas and cherries, which they earned 1/4th of a penny per pound to pick.

Floss witnessed over a century of historical events and inventions and technological advances. Her life spanned the end of WWI, the spanish flu, WWII, the Great Depression, Korean war, landing on the moon, the Vietnam War, 9/11 and many such occurrences. Her childhood home had no running water, was heated by a pot-bellied stove, and was lit by a coal oil lamp. She shared a bed with her sister and often woke up in winter with frost on her eyelashes and hair.

Horse and buggy were the means of transportation through most of her childhood. Excitement was felt by all when the installation of water, a bathroom, electricity, telephone and a washing machine were installed. The Great Depression was difficult but she remembered her childhood as very happy, having enough, and never going to bed hungry.

Floss graduated from Davis High school and soon after married John Kearns Lawson whom she knew to be "an example of excellence, a true friend and who was loved by all who knew him." On their first date, John walked her two and a half miles home from a Mutual activity just for the pleasure of her company, hobbling all the way on crutches with a broken foot. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on her birthday in 1937. They were married 37 years when John was taken from Floss too soon in a tragic accident. She continued their legacy of love through her devotion to the gospel and creating an unbreakable family bond. They raised four beautiful children; Kearns W. Lawson (Joan), David W. Lawson (Beverly). Lynda Hans (Stephen) and Laurel Morris (Rex).

She spent her life devoted to her husband, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, her children and to the honest pursuit of personal betterment. She loved all good things: Sunday night family dinner, reading, music, travel, quilting and sewing, animals, genealogy, gardening, and BYU sports. She had a beautiful alto voice, an artist's heart and a poets soul. Her creativity in writing and oil painting still inspires us. She loved a good game of cards, a competitive round of Scrabble and could bowl 300. She was a quick wit, sharp with a turn-of-phrase and we all knew her as a walking dictionary.

As a faithful member of the church, she was called to lead in many capacities. She served in the Primary and MIA Stake Presidency, ward Relief Society President, and was a missionary in the California Fresno Mission. Floss was also active in her community, serving on the board of the SCERA Center for the Arts for 5 years. She took great pride in her neighborhood and was proud of winning local awards for her flowers and garden.

She lived many years in the Heatheridge Ward in Orem and became everyone's favorite grandma. They embraced her as their own and made sure she was well looked after. On each holiday, her doorbell rang again and again with a stream of adoring neighbors. She was loved so well by those fine friends.

Floss was preceded in death by her husband John Kearns Lawson, her brothers, Rulon Wiseman (Ida), Glen Wiseman (Nellie), Clyde Wiseman (Faye), her sisters, Marjorie Thornley (Gordon), Lona Stevens (Angus) and Lorraine Barber (Clinton) and her daughter Lynda Hans (Stephen).

Her sister Jean Hartvigsen(Ned) is still living. Her legacy continues on through her children, twenty-two grandchildren and thirty-nine great-grandchildren and will be tenderly remembered and sincerely missed by all.

To her last days, she remained happy and content with life and wished "her beloved children and grandchildren to know the convictions of (her] heart and soul", her testimony of the gospel and that families are forever.

Services will be held March 30th at Heatheridge 2nd Ward 450 E 2000 N. Orem, Utah. She will be interred in the Bountiful City Cemetery following the funeral.
