IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Floyd Hill
Gowans
August 19, 1929 – August 5, 2023
Floyd Hill Gowans, son of Floyd De La Mare Gowans and Rachel Hill Gowans, passed away peacefully at home in Orem, Utah on August 5th, 2023. He was 93. He is survived by his children Floyd (Karen), Robert (Sharon), Carol (Bernard) Messina, Eileen (Sean) Healy, James (Vickie), Joseph (Sarah), Michael (Jean), 35 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, his sister Alice Jane Evans and his brother Fred R. Gowans. He is preceded in death by his wife Shannon, daughter Susan and granddaughter Rachel Despain.
Floyd was born in Tooele, Utah on August 19, 1929. Shortly after his birth his father took a position with the General Electric Company in Erie, PA. where Floyd lived until age 21 when he was called to serve in the Northern California Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After his mission, he attended Brigham Young University where he met his future wife, Shannon Hepworth. After a sweet courtship and engagement, they were married on June 9, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Floyd earned his bachelor's degree in Political Science from BYU in April 1953 and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Utah in 1956. He worked for a short time in a private law firm then went to work for Salt Lake City as the Assistant City Prosecutor. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed as City Prosecutor, then later as a City Judge. In 1969, he was appointed to the 5th Circuit Court where he served until his retirement in 1992.
Floyd also had many years of service in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many capacities including Bishop, Stake High Councilor, Stake President and Regional Representative. Floyd and Shannon served two missions together. They served as the office couple in the Auckland, New Zealand mission in 1993 and 1994. Then they served as President and Companion of the Santa Rosa, California Mission from 1994 to 1997.
After retirement and missions, Floyd and Shannon took time to travel to various places. When asked what he liked most about traveling, dad said: "Coming home." We imagine that after passing away, he said: "I'm happy to be home."
A viewing will be held on Friday, 11 August from 6 to 8 PM at 1780 North 165 East Orem, Utah 84057. The funeral will be held on Saturday 12 August from 11 AM to 12 PM with a viewing prior to the funeral from 9 to 10:30 AM at the same address as above.
