Obituary

Gaylen Tolman Harmon passed peacefully at the age of 92, on June 2, 2019. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones.  Gaylen was born on May 13, 1927 to Walter Sperry Harmon and Laprele Tolman in Afton, Wyoming, the sixth of 14 children. He married Nelda Jean Merrell on June 2, 1951 and they had nine children.  He was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Gaylen is beloved by his children, grandchildren, family and friends. He was a faithful husband and devoted father and grandfather. He was extremely kind-hearted, playful, and good-natured, always ready with a good joke or prank. He loved to laugh and get others to join in. He regularly connected with his children and grandchildren by telling them how much he loved them and building them up positively with praise and advice.  Two things that he loved to do in his youth and later in life was riding horses, competing in amateur boxing, camping, and golf.  In 1945, Gaylen was conscripted into U.S. Army and served overseas in Japan and then later served as a full-time missionary for the Church in Missouri.  In both service opportunities, he loved and served the people dearly, even the enemy , and spoke of them regularly throughout his life. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor's degree in 1953.  He began his work life as an educator, and then later had a successful career in sales management.  He cared deeply for the welfare of others with whom he worked, often went out of his way to serve and care for the underdog. He seemed to look for and see the good in everyone. Gaylen loved music and was a wonderful singer and dancer. One of his favorite things to do was to sing with his sweetheart, Nelda, and their family. He also had wonderful memories of singing with the Madrigal Singers when he attended Brigham Young University.  If asked how he achieved his many successes in his life or how he overcame his challenges, Gaylen would say that it was because of his firm faith in Jesus Christ. His testimony of Jesus Christ grounded him and was the foundation of his life. He had a great sense of his eternal identity and his purpose on earth.  He loved sharing his testimony with others. He served in many church assignments and influential callings throughout his life, one of the highlights being his service with his wife, Nelda, in a BYU YSA Stake before she passed on.   Gaylen will be missed deeply by his family, but they believe with great faith that he has returned to his true home with God, and is reunited in love with his wife and other family members and friends. Gaylen was preceded in death by his wife, Nelda, and his oldest daughter, Beverly Harmon Hatton, granddaughter Jessica Harris, his parents, and five of his siblings. He is survived by his other eight siblings, his children Mike (Dee Dee), Jon (Karla), Jane Clarkson (Mitch), Dan (Robin), GayLynn Clawson (David), Jim (Tanya), Valerie Gundersen (Troy), and Lisa Harris, and his 38 grandchildren and 51 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.
