IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George S
Rowley
July 11, 1929 – October 27, 2021
George Sloan Rowley Jr, 92, of Orem, Utah, returned to his Heavenly Father and was reunited with his sweetheart on October 27, 2021, surrounded by his loved ones.
George was born in Wilkinsburg, PA July 11, 1929 to George Sloan Rowley Sr. and Viola Bella Jones. His early childhood was spent in Trafford, PA. He loved spending his time with his grandparents, especially his grandpap and grandma Jones.
He later moved to East McKeesport where he graduated from High School. He attended Tri-State University where he studied Electrical Engineering. After graduation, he worked for General Electric. He attended the University of Toledo where he received his Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked for a time as a professional engineer and then realized that his true love was teaching and returned to Tri-State University as a professor.
In the summer of 1973 he met and courted Kathryn (Kitty) Wattier. She introduced him to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. George studied the Church teachings and met with the missionaries and was soon baptized a member of the church before moving to Utah to marry Kitty. They were married November 3, 1973. They were later sealed in the Washington D.C. Temple on July 13, 1979.
After a few years in Utah, George accepted a position back at Tri-State University, where he returned to teaching. He was the President of the Midwestern Chapter of the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineering). In 1982, George accepted a Professorship at Metropolitan State College in Denver, Colorado. After many years of teaching and mentoring students, who loved him, he retired in 1999. He and Kitty accepted a mission call for the LDS Church to serve in Nauvoo, Illinois, where he served primarily as the Director at the Carthage Jail Historical Site. After their release, they settled in St. George, Utah, where they stayed until 2020 when they moved to Orem, Utah to be with family.
George has served as Elder's Quorum President, Bishop, Branch President, High Counselor, High Priest Group Leader, Gospel Doctrine Teacher and Temple Ordinance Worker. He loved the gospel, serving in all his callings, and loved the people he served. He was truly loved by everyone, everywhere he lived.
George loved playing golf, playing card games with family and friends, and really enjoyed going on long drives. He and Kitty enjoyed travelling, and one of their favorite memories was taking their grandchildren on long trips back east. They purchased an RV and spent a lot of time with family and friends travelling the country. This last year, he has enjoyed reading endless books to his greatgrandchildren. He was grateful he had the opportunity to visit with his sisters and family in Pittsburgh and spend time reminiscing.
George is survived by his sisters, Charlotte "Bunny" Morrison, Shirley Eisaman, and Vi Hensler, his sons Kenneth Wattier, Timothy (Jenalyn) Rowley, Thomas (Lorrie) Rowley, and Tom Brown. He was preceded in death by his brother Charles Rowley, his daughter Chris McNeal, sons Ronald Wattier and Donald Wattier, granddaughter Melissa Higbee, and great grandson Ronin Gene Rowley. He has 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, November 6, 2021, 11 am in the Orchard 7th Ward, 810 East 600 North, Orem. Family and friends may visit that morning from 9:30-10:30 am at the church. Interment will be in Orem City Cemetery.
