Obituary

Gloria Mathews Hilton 1924 ~ 2017 Gloria Mathews Hilton, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend passed away July 31, 2017 in Orem, Utah. She was born on July 5, 1924 to Ila Thompson and James Morrell Mathews in Scipio, UT. She was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the age of eight in the Scipio irrigation ditch. She lived a life of service dedicated to her family and church. She graduated from Millard High in Fillmore then attended BYU where she studied Elementary Education. She met her future husband, Lawrence (Lar) Roy Hilton, at a matinee dance. Lar was soon called to active duty where he served in the United States Army. While he was gone, Gloria taught school in Scipio, and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on November 20, 1945. They returned to BYU where Gloria completed her degree. She taught school at Garfield Elementary in Salt Lake while Lar completed his degree in mechanical engineering at the U of U. They were blessed with five children: Ila Gayle (Les) Andrews, Craig (Shirley) Hilton, Rosemary (Marshall) Madsen, Mathew (Debbie) Hilton and James (Cindy) Hilton. Gloria devoted her life to raising her family and was a wonderful homemaker. As her children grew older, she enjoyed substitute teaching. The children loved to have her in their classroom! Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren all felt she was their biggest cheerleader, always encouraging them to develop their talents and do their best. It was an inspiration to see how Lar and Gloria worked as a team in everything they did including serving in their callings, preparing meals, canning fruit, caring for their home and garden and loving and serving their family. Gloria earned her 25 year pin for her service in Primary. She also served many years in the Relief Society. She was active in her DUP chapter and loved music, flowers, baking, walking and the Utah Jazz! Gloria's sweet husband passed away on July 5, 2003. They shared 57 wonderful years together. Gloria is survived by her brother, Alan Mathews, and his wife, Zelda. Her dear sister, Madelyn Starley, passed away just 10 months ago. Her posterity includes five children and their spouses, 18 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren with 3 more on the way. Our family wishes to express special thanks to the staff at Summerfield Manor Assisted Living for their kind and loving care. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 11 am in the LDS Chapel at 865 W 1000 N in Orem. There will be a viewing prior to the service at 9:30 am. Interment will be held in the Scipio Cemetery at approximately 3 pm.
