Obituary

Hugh Sennott Gregson, age 89, of South Jordan, UT, passed away at his home on Thursday,

October 16, 2025.

Hugh was born to Harold and Ivy Gregson of Vancouver, British Columbia on September 28,

1936. It was the height of the Depression, and as the famous family story goes, his father

frantically found the local doctor and told him he would pay him all of the money he had to

deliver the baby. Hugh was born at home and weighed in at over 10 pounds. The fee Dr. Hugh

Dickey collected? A whopping one dollar and the chance to name the baby after himself.

Hugh was the 5th of six children; four sisters and a brother. He was precocious and the apple of

his mother's eye; forever a momma's boy. Due to his size, he commanded respect wherever he

went. Even in the elementary school classroom. He used to tell the story of how he threatened

to beat up any kids who made a ruckus while their teacher read them "Anne of Green Gables."

You see, he fell hard and early for those fiery redheads.

Hugh excelled in sports and school. He played basketball and ran track. But at night he went

home to his primitive house, a converted chicken coop, with no running water or electricity. He

spent his summers shoveling turkey waste at the turkey farms and gutting salmon at the

cannery to help support his disabled father, his mother and his siblings. At school he was

popular, ultimately winning the election for student body president of Surrey High School where

he graduated in 1954.

After high school he went to college and got a teaching certificate. He actually taught high

school in Northern British Columbia for a time before he decided to serve an LDS mission. Right

before he left on his mission, he ran into a cute little redhead in Provo, UT. He had met her

before in his sister's ward in Spokane, Washington and when they met this time the sparks flew.

They had one romantic date before he left for his mission and he asked her to write to him while

he served in Sweden. After 2 ½ years of letters, Hugh returned home and went directly to

Spokane where he spent a week with Linda and her family. At the end of the week they were

engaged.

On December 27, 1963, Hugh married his sweetheart, Linda Elise Jensen, in the Cardston

Alberta temple. They lived in Toronto, Ontario for a time after their marriage and their first child,

Geoffrey, was born there. They then moved down to the states and four daughters followed:

Elise, Krista, Mindy and Teresa. The family lived in Idaho and Utah, but ultimately settled in

Bothell, Washington where they finished raising their children.

Hugh provided well for his family through insurance and financial planning. He was general

manager of the MONY group, Principal Financial Group and Sun Financial Group. The work he

enjoyed the most, aside from his family, was his church work. He served in many different

capacities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a bishop five times, even

serving as the bishop at the Utah State Prison. He also served in the Bothell Stake Presidency

and in leadership at the MTC. But his favorite calling of all was as the Utah Provo Mission

President from 1997-2000. That was the highlight of both Hugh and Linda's church service.

Hugh lost his sweetheart, the Lovely Linda, on October 23, 2017. We are pleased to announce

that they have been reunited. He leaves behind his son Geoffrey (Cindy) Gregson and

daughters Elise (Rory) Hanson, Krista (Jeff) Walker, Mindy (Brian) McDermaid, and Teresa

(Peter) Tennis; as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be sorely

missed

In the words of our beloved Big Guy, "You hired out for a tough guy, now make good."

Memorial Services will be held on November 8th at 11:00 am at Sagewood at Daybreak 11289

S. Oakmont Rd. South Jordan Utah 84009.
