Ivan Karl Holt, 81, passed away Wednesday August 14 2019. He was born in Oakley Idaho the son of Ivan W. Holt and Ruth Clarissa Parry. He was the 7th child in a family of eight and grew up loved and cosseted by his sisters.
Ivan attended BYU Provo for two years then served an LDS mission to Uruguay and Paraguay where he had great success as a missionary. 50 years later he and his wife returned to Uruguay and met a man at church who Ivan had baptized. The man had three generations of family members who were active in Church and he was thrilled to present them to Ivan. Ivan was very happy to know that his efforts had changed so many lives.
In 1961, Ivan's life was changed when he met Lenore, the teacher of one of his nephews, in California. He was recently returned from his mission and she was finishing the school year and preparing to leave on a mission to France. He was smitten and no other would do. As he waited for Lenore, Ivan continued to be a stake missionary in his home ward in Idaho and at BYU. He was a wonderful advocate for the gospel of Jesus Christ and instrumental in bringing many people to baptism. Ivan and Lenore wrote for two years and were married on August 23 1963 in the Idaho Falls Temple, shortly after Lenore returned from France. Ivan and Lenore had four children: David C. Holt of Orem, UT; Michael K. Holt (Marjorie) of Lindon, UT; Rachelle (David) Knight of Vacaville, CA; Robert G. Holt deceased (Valerie). He had six sisters and one brother: Roberta Thatcher- deceased; Effie Mills – deceased; Edna Mills; Nancy Olsen; Ruth Burton; Jane Warner –deceased; Wilson Holt – deceased. 15 grandchildren survive him.
Ivan and Lenore moved to Hayward, California in 1963 for Ivan to begin a teaching career in Industrial Arts. In 1969 Ivan embarked on another important part of his life: he built his first home and in 1972 became a General Contractor. His passion for building extended from the schoolroom to the community and ever after, Ivan liked to have a construction project, including one or more of his children at his side as a master helper. They all came out of it with an amazing work ethic. Ivan was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a Bishop and Counselor in the San Jose East Stake Presidency. During that time he also went to school and received a masters degree in School Administration from San Jose State College.
In 1980, Ivan and Lenore moved to Loomis, California. There, Ivan built houses and worked as an Industrial Arts teacher and spent some years as an Assistant Principal. A new chapter in their lives began when Ivan retired and Ivan and Lenore left to serve one of several adult missions as Area Welfare Agents in the Central America area with a second stint in the Lima Peru Area. Ivan was very effective at finding humanitarian projects and getting them approved. He was fearless in his desire to fulfill his mission and help improve peoples' lives. He worked with everyone from hospital cooks to the First Lady of Guatemala to accomplish good. He also loved his calling as a Temple worker for 10 years in the Oakland and Sacramento temples.
Ivan loved to walk and read. He always had a Louis Lamoure novel at hand, reading them all over and over again. He loved to watch westerns and connected with the life of a cowboy since it reflected his early years on the farm helping his father. He always remembered his horse Scout fondly and finding and refurbishing his childhood saddle was a joy to him. He loved looking for land and dreamed of having acreage where he could raise cows. He was always taking Lenore down dirt roads to check out acreage for pastures. Ivan enjoyed travel and he and Lenore traveled all over the world on adventures like camping through Europe and cruising to Alaska. Together, they established a wonderful tradition of a yearly family vacation to Lake Tahoe- a tradition that has lasted 42+ years and has become an annual family reunion all look forward too. He was a force to be reckoned with and will be missed by his family and friends.
