Obituary

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests looking out of your front door and fill the need of someone struggling. Get creative and do it, Ivin would!

Ivin LaPhel Holt was born of goodly parents "about 9 P.M." June 18, 1930, in Enterprise, Utah. He was the first of seven children born of James Ivin Holt and Maribah Ann (Terry) Holt. To his family and community, he was known as "LaPhel". To his best friends, he was "Loppy".

To the New England Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints in 1950-52 he was known as "Elder Holt". To Uncle Sam and the U.S. Army Signal Corp and UN Partisan Infantry in Korea in 1952-54 he was known as a loyal and patriotic soldier who kept crucial power and communication systems operational in Yangido and Inchon Harbor. To the "attractive young lady" from Kanosh, Utah whom he met at BYU in 1955 he was known as (wouldn't you like to know!). And, at "10:o'clock on June 22, 1956" in the St. George Temple sealing room where he had previously proposed to her, together they became husband and wife, known to all as Mr. and Mrs. Ivin LaPhel and Louise Viola (Watts) Holt.

In 1959 thru 1964 he was known by each of his 4 baby children as "da" or "da…da". Then, for the next 59+ years after his children learned to speak, he was known as "dad" – the loving man who, amongst many important things, strived to teach them: how to walk; how to pray; the precious value of a relationship with God; a respect for the Priesthood of God; a respect for life; that he was tender hearted and cried more deeply than they did on the occasion that he had to spank a couple of them (yes they deserved it); how to fix almost anything; how to ride a bike; how to work VERY hard; how to deer hunt; how to rock hunt; how to do body work on a vehicle one of the children had wrecked; how to laugh about sleeping at the world famous "Castle in the Rockies" Fairmont Banff Springs luxury resort, in the parking lot, in a station wagon; how to appreciate what they had; how to travel, sleep, and co-exist in a pick-up and camper shell across the United States and throughout Mexico; how to appreciate different people and cultures; how to respect others; how to get back up and keep going when things got tough; and how to trust in God.

For 30 years at BYU, 1963-93, he was known as "Dr. Holt" / "Professor Holt" and "the best Senior Project Supervisor" by students whom he loved and taught through the technology eras of vacuum tubes to transistors to computers to microcomputers and all the coding to make a computer "think" logically. His students knew they were of greater priority to him than were academic publishing or accolades.

In 1969 Ivin and Louise moved their family from a little, white, wood siding house just down the street from Heap's-a-Pizza (the Brick Oven in Provo), up to the Grandview Hill area. For the next 54 years Ivin was known to his neighbors as "Ivin" / "Brother Holt" – a most kind and caring neighbor who exemplified the Lord's commandment to "Love thy neighbor as thy self". He was a neighbor who would: make the time to stop and lend a sincere ear and listening heart to a story or concern; share a kind hello; leave anonymous gifts in mailboxes; always look forward to joining in each Tuesday with the Stake quilting group, making quilts for the Bishop's storehouse; always share his delicious fresh peaches at fall harvest time; make time to reach out and lend a helping hand; have an interesting story about any of the curious rocks in his little corner rock garden; or, have a beautiful, polished, little rock to give any of the children of the neighborhood who came by.

On Sunday, October 29, 2023, after a very full life, Ivin returned to his loved ones and friends who had awaited his return to his heavenly home; known by God, we believe, as a "good and faithful servant". Ivin was preceded by his mother and father – James and Maribah, and by his wife – Louise. He leaves his earthly legacy with his son – Terry, his three daughters – Leticia, Michelle, and Teresa, 18 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and his 6 siblings – Laurel, Elvis, Verus, Ferron, Charlotte, and LaMar.
