Jack Vernal Brown passed away September 18, 2022 at the age of 91. Jack was born September 30, 1930 in Parker Idaho to Joseph Vernal and Ella Mason Brown. He married Emma Louise Sundquist on January 4, 1954 in the Salt Lake Temple. He passed peacefully while in the care of Emma in their home.
Jack grew up in Idaho and learned to play hard and work hard. As he and Emma raised their eight children, they taught them through their example to also work and play hard and to serve and love the gospel. He began his education at Brigham Young University. He served in the Mexico Mission for two and one half years. He was then drafted into the Korean War and served as a company Clerk. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant.
After the war, he completed his bachelors and masters degrees at Brigham Young University in Spanish graduating with honors and pursued a doctoral degree at the University of Syracuse, New York.
In 1965, Jack accepted a position at Brigham Young University as an Associate Professor. He loved teaching Spanish and the cultures of Latin America for 30 years.
Jack actively served in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of his life. A few of his callings were Bishop, MTC Branch President, serving with the youth in various capacities, and 15 years as a temple ordinance worker. Jack and Emma completed two full time missions: Quito Ecuador, Santiago Chile with Jack serving as the Area Authority Secretary, and five service missions: MTC, Family History Center, Genealogy Society of Utah, etc.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, 6 siblings, (Eleanor, Wynn, Versus, Beverly, Joel, Marilyn). He is survived by his wife: Emma Sundquist Brown, siblings: Ilene Cooley, Leila Chadwick, Max Brown, Linelle Rose, Verla Beus, Valerie Schaechter; eight children: Jerry Brown (Lizelle), Rita Lawson (Kenneth), Douglas Brown (Carol), Steven Brown (Amanda), Lori Wright (Stuart), Cheryl Giles (David), Richard Brown (Kimberly), Brenda Fromm (Bradley); 38 grandchildren; and 42 greatgrandchildren.
A viewing for family and friends will be held September 23, 2022 9:30 to 10:30 am with the funeral services following at 11:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Orchard 2nd Ward Chapel 670 E. 800 N. Orem Utah. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery 1520 N. 800 E. Orem, Utah.
Jack loved his family, the gospel and his Savior, playing games with his family, and BYU sports. It is unanimous that he bled BYU blue through and through.
