Obituary

Jack Raymond Helsten, 94 years old, of Orem, Utah died on April 3, 2018 in St. George, Utah from complications following a heart attack and a fall.  He was born in Scofield, Utah on February 3, 1924, to Gust Fabia Helsten, and Amy LaVene Staley.  He was raised by his grandparents after losing both of his parents before he was a teenager.  Jack graduated from Wasatch Academy, in Mt. Pleasant and attended college at Westminster and University of Utah in SLC.  He played basketball and baseball and loved all sports.    He proudly and willingly served in the United States Army, World War II, in the Asiatic Pacific theater under General MacArthur.  His patriotism and respect for this great country was evident as he flew the American flag daily at his home throughout his life.  After knowing Phyllis Crawford of Helper, Utah a few short weeks he marched into her place of business and said, "I have $300 and no job. Do you want to get married?"  She said "yes", and they were married one-week later September 14, 1946.   They shared 66 happy and full years prior to her passing in 2012.  Honesty, loyalty, and hard-work punctuated his life in all areas of work from ranching, herding sheep, railroad runner, the car business and his career in the industrial bearing business primarily in SLC and Orem.  He loved spending time in Scofield at the cabin on the lake whether it was fishing, hunting, boating, water skiing, or dirt-biking, He was a terrific bowler, posting many scores in the 200+ range including a 289!  He was a fairly good golfer as well. Jack and Phyllis were members of the Good Sam Travel club and enjoyed many trips around the western United States and Canada.  He diligently served in various positions of leadership in Good Sam as well as the Elks and Winter Haven RV Resort.  He took pride in his home and yard, winning best yard in Orem.  He loved to decorate for Christmas with lots of lights for everyone's enjoyment.  He had many friends because he was kind, generous and helpful to everyone who asked, whether it was advice on a project or just to borrow a tool.  Survived by daughter Diane Henley, (Rich) of Sanibel, FL; son, J.
