Obituary

Jack Clark Sumner, 81, passed away May 10, 2019.  Jack was born December 5, 1937, in Provo, Utah, at the Crane Maternity Home.  His parents are Harold Bean and Dona Clark Sumner. His first great love was his junior high sweetheart, Eris Christine Yergensen.  They were married August 19, 1955, in Orem, Utah. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on June 3, 2016. Jack graduated in 1956 from Lincoln High School in Orem, Utah, where he was active in sports.  He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1964 and then taught History for 41 years. He taught at Orem Jr High School and Oak Canyon Jr High School.  He also worked as a printer at the family-owned Orem-Geneva Times newspaper for 50+ years. Farming was also one of his greatest loves. Jack was a world-wide traveler.  He loved meeting people and learning about other cultures.  He met his goal of traveling to all 7 continents. His highlights included hiking to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro in Northern Africa. Also hiking to the base camp of Mt. Everest in 2011 at the age of 73. The Sherpas told him he was the oldest man on the mountain. He had an opportunity to swim in the Antarctic Ocean after diving off the Russian ice breaker he was traveling on. He is survived by his loving wife, Eris Christine Yergensen Sumner; children, Sherry Sumner Heaps (Steve) and Pamela Sumner Doak (Jim); 10 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his siblings, Sandi Sumner Hendry (Mike); Brent Sumner (Becky). Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sylvia Sumner Strong and her husband Clyde Strong. Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 14, 2019, 11:00 a.m., Northridge 2nd Ward, 1780 North 165 East, Orem, UT. Friends and family may visit Monday, May 13, 2019, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and prior to services from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Orem City Cemetery, 1520 North 800 East, Orem. Condolences may be offered and memories shared online at www.walkersanderson.com .
